About Mentor A Promise:
Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, literacy enrichment, academic support, social‑emotional learning, creative arts, technology, and community‑centered innovation, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive. With programs including MAP Roots, MAP Connect, PromisePlay, PromisePress, Threads of Voices, Thread & Promise, The Bells I Hear Podcast, and our Community Impact Lab, MAP is building a citywide ecosystem of support for youth navigating unstable housing. Our work is rooted in equity, dignity, human‑centered design, and long‑term community investment.
About the Role:
The Chief of Staff serves as a key strategic partner to the Founder & CEO, helping manage high‑level priorities, organizational systems, cross‑team coordination, and emerging strategic initiatives. This role supports daily executive operations, strengthens internal structures, and ensures MAP’s mission and values are reflected across programs. Key Responsibilities Executive & Strategic Support
Serve as a thought partner to the Founder & CEO, helping prioritize, plan, and execute organizational initiatives.
Support executive decision‑making through research, data synthesis, and strategic recommendations.
Prepare briefings, summaries, and documents for meetings with partners, stakeholders, funders, and team leads.
Cross‑Department Coordination
Facilitate communication between MAP teams (HR, Education, Policy, Creative, Innovation, Technology, Housing, Fashion, Media, etc.).
Oversee follow‑through on key tasks, deadlines, and deliverables across the organization.
Support weekly, monthly, and quarterly planning cycles.
Operations & Governance
Strengthen internal systems, workflows, and documentation to support organizational efficiency.
Assist with volunteer onboarding, internal communications, and cross‑team alignment.
Help monitor compliance with nonprofit, HR, and policy guidelines.
Special Projects & Innovation
Support the launch and coordination of major MAP initiatives (PromisePlay, PromisePress, Thread & Promise, Innovation Lab, real estate/housing projects, etc.).
Lead or support research projects, strategic analyses, and impact reports.
Assist with storytelling, presentations, and materials that communicate MAP’s mission.
Communication & Leadership Support
Draft high‑level emails, memos, and reports on behalf of the Office of the CEO.
Represent the CEO in internal and partner discussions when appropriate.
Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion across all interactions.
Qualifications
Strong organizational, operational, or administrative leadership experience.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast‑paced environment.
Exceptional communication skills – written, verbal, and interpersonal.
Strategic thinker with strong problem‑solving and systems‑building abilities.
Experience in nonprofit management, education, youth development, HR, policy, or project management (preferred).
Commitment to equity, trauma‑informed practice, and culturally responsive leadership.
High emotional intelligence, professionalism, adaptability, and discretion.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across diverse teams.
Bonus Skills (Not Required)
Experience supporting executives, founders, or organizational leaders.
Background in operations, HR, compliance, or strategic planning.
Skills in design thinking, storytelling, research, or innovation.
Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred).
Commitment
Volunteer role, 5–10 hours per week depending on project cycles.
Minimum 6‑month commitment preferred.
Hybrid In‑person and/or remote via Google Meet.
