Position Summary:
Sojourner House is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026 and seeks an experienced communications professional contracted to oversee the planning and execution of communication strategies that elevate the reputation and visibility of the organization’s mission, programs, and fundraising opportunities in this pivotal and exciting year in its history. This is an independent contractor role that provides strategic oversight and support, while day-to-day implementation remains with internal staff.
Working with the development department, the Fractional Communications Director will lead the communications team, and will be responsible for amplifying Sojourner House’s voice and advancing its mission. This role will work directly with communications staff in storytelling and media strategy across multiple channels – traditional, digital, and social, as well as cultivating new audiences through untapped outlets, with the goal of strengthening Sojourner House’s visibility, elevating the agency’s work to new audiences, and increasing engagement among partners, funders, individual donors, policymakers, and the public.
The position will provide guidance and direction to two full-time staff members and will be highly collaborative, partnering with program, development, and executive teams to ensure Sojourner House’s mission and community impact stories are told consistently and powerfully across platforms.
DELIVERABLES Final priorities and timelines for these deliverables will be established collaboratively at the beginning of the contract period, but a scope of work will likely oversee staff in the completion of the following activities:
Creation and implementation of Annual Communications Plan
Contracting with vendor for website update supporting 50th Anniversary campaign
Contracting with vendor for creation of 50th Anniversary logo for development and marketing materials
Marketing, outreach, and press opportunities for an Educational Conference and other activities in celebration of the 50th Anniversary
Strategically coordinating 50th Anniversary marketing, outreach, and press opportunities alongside the organization’s traditional communications and development activities
Creation of materials in support of organization’s legislative policy and advocacy goals
QUALIFICATIONS: While no candidate is expected to meet every single qualification, an ideal candidate will possess the majority of the skills and experiences listed below.
At least 7–10 years senior level communications leadership is preferred.
Experience working as a consultant or in a fractional leadership role is a plus.
Experience managing milestone or anniversary campaigns is preferred.
Familiarity with affordable housing and/or the dynamics of interpersonal violence.
Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
Passion for Sojourner House’s mission and values, and a commitment to creating equitable, survivor-centered spaces.
Must pass a BCI background check.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
Exceptional writing and editing skills, including experience preparing op-eds, press releases, feature stories, speeches, and talking points.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build relationships across teams and with external partners.
Proven ability to translate complex issues into clear, compelling narratives for a variety of audiences.
Strong grasp of adapting messages for different platforms (e.g., website, print, video, and social media).
Demonstrated success in media relations, including cultivating press contacts and organizing media events.
Strategic thinker who can connect day-to-day communications work to larger organizational goals.
Ability to utilize metrics for planning and implementation purposes.
SCHEDULE: This position will be a contract role, 5-15 hours per week, with much work done on site. Travel to other offices and agency-owned buildings throughout the state may be required. Some evening and weekend hours may be necessary to meet agency needs.
