Principal Psychiatrist (DMHAS) – Overview

Work Format:

Full‑time or part‑time, on‑site. Salary:

$241,644 – $315,292 per year + bonuses and benefits. Role

You will provide advanced psychiatric care, clinical leadership, and direct oversight of multidisciplinary teams. The Principal Psychiatrist leads clinical services, ensures high quality care, and supports state mental health initiatives. Responsibilities

Provide 24-hour supervision and on-call coverage as scheduled. Make rounds, deliver direct care, and provide clinical oversight of treatment teams. Coordinate work of medical staff with related programs. Review treatment plans, clinical records, diagnoses, and discharge plans for policy adherence. Deliver education and training (grand rounds, case conferences). Assign, oversee, and evaluate staff and on-site night duty physicians. Consult on difficult and complex cases; provide advanced risk assessments. Develop and implement QA/QI initiatives; prepare reports, medical records, correspondences. Attend court hearings as a state witness; perform related duties as required. Qualifications

Board Certified or Board Eligible in Adult/Child or Adolescent Psychiatry (ABPN). Licensed to practice medicine in Connecticut; temporary license up to 12 months acceptable. Experience delivering psychiatric care in inpatient or community settings. Strong interpersonal, communication, and supervisory skills. Ability to diagnose, prescribe, and manage psychiatric medications and psychotherapy. Competence in quality assurance, utilization review, and evidentiary documentation. Certification in additional areas (e.g., Forensic, Addiction) optional but advantageous. Bilingual proficiency is a plus. Benefits & Compensation
