SALT (State & Local) Tax Director - $200K + Bonus
Hybrid position based in Union County, New Jersey.
Pay Range Base salary: $170,000.00/yr – $200,000.00/yr. Total compensation may exceed $200K with bonus potential.
About the Company Henderson Harbor Tax, a specialized tax placement division of Henderson Harbor Group, has served clients for 16 years by placing professionals from Tax Associates to Chief Tax Officers and Tax Partners across the U.S. and Canada.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the U.S. Federal and State income tax function, overseeing return preparation and review, estimated payments, extensions, and overall compliance.
Provide technical expertise on domestic tax matters, focusing on State taxation—including apportionment, sourcing, nexus, and legislative updates.
Serve as the primary advisor on domestic tax risks, opportunities, and projected impacts while ensuring alignment across compliance, provision, and audit positions.
Oversee ASC 740 Federal and State provision work, including quarterly/annual ETRs, deferred tax balances, and return‑to‑provision adjustments.
Partner with senior leadership, business units, and technology teams to support financial reporting, transformation initiatives, and strategic decision‑making.
Collaborate with the tax planning team to develop and execute domestic tax planning strategies.
Manage, mentor, and develop a team of tax professionals, fostering technical growth and strong cross‑functional collaboration.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or Master’s in Taxation strongly preferred.
7+ years of progressive experience in U.S. Federal and State income taxation, ideally within a corporate tax department or Big 4/public accounting environment.
Strong technical knowledge of State income tax concepts, including apportionment, sourcing, nexus, and ASC 740.
Proven experience reviewing complex Federal and State tax returns and provision calculations.
Demonstrated ability to identify tax risks, evaluate opportunities, and communicate impacts to senior leadership.
Experience managing tax controversy matters and coordinating consistent filing and audit positions.
Familiarity with tax technology, transformation projects, and systems integration (e.g., provision software, ERP platforms).
Strong leadership skills with experience managing and developing tax professionals.
Excellent communication, analytical, and project‑management capabilities.
