Position: System Specialist I Join to apply for the System Specialist I role at Harris County.

Position Description The System Specialist I is responsible for managing and maintaining all hardware-related components of the IT infrastructure. Key duties include processing hardware work orders, providing help desk support, assisting remote tax office locations, and performing repairs on computers, printers, and other devices. The role also supports domain user and administrator management, assists with server maintenance, and contributes to event planning for elections and tax sales.

Duties and Responsibilities

Respond to and resolve hardware-related work orders. Provide technical support for computer systems, printers, and peripheral devices. Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity issues. Document support cases and resolutions.

Remote Support for Tax Office Locations. Assist tax office employees with IT-related issues remotely and in person. Ensure connectivity and functionality of computers, printers, and network devices. Drive to other tax office locations to troubleshoot and resolve issues as needed.

Domain User & Server Management. Manage domain user accounts, permissions, and security settings. Assist with domain administrator tasks, including server maintenance and updates.

Event Planning Support (Elections & Tax Sale). Set up and maintain IT hardware for election events and tax sales. Ensure system functionality and security during critical events.

Perform other assigned duties.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited institution in the U.S.

At least two years of professional engineering experience.

One year of experience maintaining buildings, fixtures, and equipment.

Two years of experience in IT support, hardware troubleshooting, or a related role.

Experience in computer hardware repair.

Three years of basic domain administration knowledge.

Additional Requirements

Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record. This position requires travel to remote tax office locations and other county facilities; therefore, the selected candidate will be subject to a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check as part of the hiring process. Employment is also contingent upon the successful completion and favorable results of a criminal background check and substance abuse screening.

Windows domain management and server administration.

Printer and peripheral device maintenance.

Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

Ability to prioritize multiple work orders effectively.

Customer service and communication skills.

Basic scripting or automation knowledge.

Preferences

Training or education in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related fields.

Knowledge of hardware troubleshooting and network fundamentals.

General Information

Work Environment: Typically, an office environment with adequate lighting and ventilation, and a normal range of temperature and noise level. Remote work only when authorized. A frequent volume of work and deadlines impose strain on a routine basis. Regular application of basic skills.

Physical Demands: Physical effort required, which may involve long periods of standing, walking, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs. or similar activities.

Working Hours: Monday-Friday 8 am - 5 pm; subject to overtime, on‑call, and weekends.

Primary Working Location: Downtown – 1001 Preston St., Houston, TX 77002.
