Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Manager
role at
Joby Aviation .
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.
Overview Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized, passionate individual to join our quality assurance team as an on-site NDT Manager and Responsible Level III in Marina, CA. As we are building and certifying an advanced composite airframe that also includes additively manufactured parts, this position is responsible for inspecting carbon composite, bonded structures, metallics, and other advanced structures using ultrasonic, digital radiography, liquid penetrant, or other state‑of‑the‑art methods. This is an opportunity to participate in developing a complete system, including influencing structural design, fabrication methods, and operational support of a new aircraft. Hands‑on experience and a “get it done” attitude are very important for this position. This position is rewarding, as the engineer will promptly see their ideas grow from concept to creation due to the fast pace of Joby Aviation.
As the NDT Manager and Responsible Level III, you will provide necessary leadership and training to the Nondestructive Inspection Team. The position will coordinate inspection tasks across sites and meet the company schedule requirements for both Development and Production.
Responsibilities
Establish, maintain, and continuously improve the NDT Written Practice and method‑specific procedures, techniques, and work instructions (e.g., UT, RT, ET, PT) across all Joby Aviation manufacturing locations
Define qualification and certification requirements for NDT personnel; administer examinations and maintain certification records (e.g., Level I/II/III)
Approve and control NDT equipment, calibration standards, consumables, and facility requirements; ensure proper system performance checks
Lead technique development and validation (e.g., probability of detection studies, sensitivity validation, qualification of new methods or instruments)
Provide day‑to‑day technical support to production, ensuring timely disposition of indications/nonconformances
Review and approve NDT setups, inspection plans, and traveler/route instructions; verify acceptance criteria and coverage
Ensure adherence to applicable standards (e.g., NAS 410/EN 4179, AS9100/ISO 9001), customer specifications, and regulatory mandates (e.g., FAA/EASA, Part 21/145 as applicable)
Interpret and apply materials/process specifications (e.g., aerospace primes, ASTM, AWS) to NDT requirements
Required
Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Materials, Physics, or related field; equivalent experience considered
Certification: Current Level III certification in at least two NDT methods (e.g., UT, ET, RT, PT, MT), with authority to certify Level I/II personnel
Experience: 7–10+ years in NDT with at least 3+ years at Level III or program‑lead capacity in production or maintenance environments
Standards Knowledge: Demonstrated mastery of NAS 410/EN 4179 requirements, and AS9100/ISO 9001 quality systems
Regulatory: Experience in aerospace/aviation compliance (e.g., FAA Production/Repair, EASA Part‑145) or similarly regulated industries
Desired
Experience with composite and metallic structures, welds, castings, additively manufactured parts, and bonded assemblies
Proven success implementing digital NDT tools (e.g., phased array UT, FMC/TFM, DR/CT, eddy array) and data management systems
Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay, bonus, and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $106,200 - $169,800 per year. The compensation package offered will be determined by location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience.
