Position Summary The Extra Help Medical Technologist I in Hematology performs a variety of tests of a moderately or highly complex nature on patient samples, and performs quality control for hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, stool, and body fluids procedures based on laboratory procedures and policies. The role assists in training laboratory personnel, new employees, medical residents, and students.
Duties & Responsibilities
Performs moderately and highly complex tests by various analyzers or manual methods on specimen sources such as blood, urine, body fluids, stool, etc.
Reviews test results before reporting, recognizing and verifying result validity and clinical relevance.
Follows laboratory established procedures and policies, notifying approved caregivers of critical results per HIPAA standards.
Performs quality assurance procedures, maintains documentation and reports irregularities.
Operates, troubleshoots, and resolves instrument technical problems and documents corrective action.
Responds to error flags, delta checks, and life‑threatening results.
Assesses accuracy and validity of obtained test results.
Prepares specimens for testing or referral.
Maintains a neat, orderly, and safe working environment and adheres to safety guidelines.
Interacts with physicians, patients, staff, visitors, and customers professionally.
Participates in CAP proficiency testing and internal quality assurance monitoring.
Performs LIS laboratory related functions on patient results through UI Hospital LIS.
Assists in training laboratory personnel and medical residents.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent.
Meets basic CLIA Subpart M qualifications for general supervisory personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of correct procedures for handling potentially infectious specimen material.
Ability to identify problems and refer them to senior staff.
Understanding of hematology theoretical applications.
Strong microscopic examination skills.
Ability to make accurate observations and plan work independently.
Knowledge of quality control and safety procedures.
Strong communication with peers, supervisors, and healthcare staff.
Professional appearance and attitude.
