The Role
The Development Director at Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) provides overall leadership in planning, directing and managing a comprehensive development program to increase both the number and quality of donor relationships in order to strengthen the financial resources of RCHS. The position requires demonstrated leadership of a development team and working with key volunteers and senior staff in aggressively developing relationships with donors that lead to successful gift solicitations. The ideal candidate must possess a willingness to work with the CEO and act as a part of the RCHS team toward focusing on strategic priorities.
Duties and Essential Responsibilities Establish long‑term relationships with donors and prospects; establish solicitation priorities, manage prospect lists and research, develop and execute targeted cultivation plans and solicitation strategies for major gift prospects.
Identify, assess, design and execute appropriate strategies for approaching prospects and donors.
Personally responsible for cultivating and soliciting prospects and donors at the highest level to secure major gifts.
Establish and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships to enlist active support of fundraising program.
Personally responsible for identifying and qualifying new potential donors at highest level.
Build the prospect portfolios for those identified on the major gift team and assign the individual responsibilities within the portfolios.
Mentor/coach/train staff and key volunteers specifically regarding moves management.
Represent the value of philanthropy to RCHS’s key volunteers and staff team to further their understanding and support of fundraising – working to build a culture of philanthropy throughout RCHS.
Develop and maintain close collaborative relationships with the CEO, VP‑Community Relations, and executive staff to gain a strong knowledge of the programs and to identify and define priorities of RCHS to be funded.
Work collaboratively with the CEO, staff and volunteers to put in place strong infrastructure and stewardship practices to provide effective donor management systems and processes for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and prospects.
Manage, supervise, and evaluate the Development team in support of a successful program that includes annual giving, major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, public funding, special events, and planned giving.
Oversee and coordinate between the Development team, Marketing & Communications Department and third party vendors the writing, design and production of electronic and print collateral materials for fundraising purposes.
Identify and/or develop and/or manage cultivation/solicitation/recognition events.
At CEO's request, attend and support the Board of Directors; serve as staff lead for creation and management of a Development Committee which establishes and oversees all aspects of Development policies and procedures.
Ensure that data related to prospects and donors is recorded and tracked in electronic files; includes proper management of record keeping, evaluate progress toward goals, prepare periodic reports on fundraising and present to leadership.
Create and recommend revisions to the fundraising plan, as needed, to meet short‑and‑long‑term goals.
Manage the fundraising budget in concert with various staff and volunteer leadership structures/committees.
Ensure documentation and execution of donor acknowledgement, stewardship and public recognition, as appropriate.
Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree, with CFRE preferred;
4+ years of professional experience in fundraising with a track record of success; specific experience in individual giving and major gifts, foundation grant writing, and working with volunteer leadership;
Proven success at securing major gift support and in establishing relationships with individuals and family foundations;
Experience in scheduling and staffing solicitation calls and conducting follow‑up communications and stewardship;
Superior verbal and written communication skills;
Demonstrated experience in developing fundraising materials and proposals;
Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills; capable of working effectively with senior management, staff, leadership volunteers, consultants, and donors/prospects;
Energetic, self‑motivated, flexible, and adaptable with a sense of humor; able to multi‑task and work independently;
Ability to work alternate schedule, including evenings and weekends;
A team‑player with a love for companion animals, an attitude of service, and the ability to motivate others; and
Computer fluency in the fundraising database software and knowledgeable about the role of technology and electronic communication in fundraising.
