Departmental Overview The Innovative Genomics Institute is a joint effort between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, with affiliates at UC Davis, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Gladstone Institutes and other institutions. The IGI’s diverse group of leading scientists have powerful interdisciplinary expertise and conduct world‑class research, driven by the real possibility of using genome engineering to treat human diseases, end hunger and respond to climate change. In addition to our scientific efforts, the IGI is committed to advancing public understanding of genome engineering and guiding the ethical use of these technologies.

Position Summary This role provides strategic leadership and high‑level program management for the ARPA‑H funded EMBODY Project at the IGI. Reporting to the Executive Director of the IGI, the position serves as a principal strategist and operational lead, driving the design, coordination and implementation of the program, and ensuring integration across multiple labs. The role exercises independent judgment in developing and executing complex, multi‑institutional project strategies, aligning scientific, administrative and compliance objectives across campuses.

Responsibilities

Lead the strategic analysis of research performance across both projects, ensuring alignment with approved Project Plans and institutional goals.

Partner with the EMBODY Director and workstream leads to establish, evaluate and refine robust performance metrics.

Design and implement program‑wide operational frameworks and “ways of work” that ensure efficiency, accountability and harmonization across academic and industry partners.

Serve as a senior integrator and liaison across UC and industry stakeholders, ensuring seamless alignment of all workstreams with EMBODY objectives.

Drive strategic collaboration and issue resolution among UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco and other partners, facilitating high‑level governance processes and overseeing recurring cross‑institutional communications.

Provide high‑level oversight and analysis of a substantial multi‑institutional budget, guiding strategic allocation of program resources across teams and campuses.

Partner with workstream leads and HR to assess staffing needs, spending patterns and long‑term resource planning.

Develop and advise on financial strategies that ensure optimal alignment of programmatic and fiscal goals in a complex, multi‑sponsor funding environment.

Synthesize and interpret complex technical and operational data from all participating campuses for strategic reporting.

Conduct program‑level analyses and lead continuous improvement of project management systems and processes.

Provide executive‑level guidance to the Principal Investigator, ensuring decision‑making is informed by accurate financial, operational and performance data.

Oversee the preparation and interpretation of monthly and quarterly financial reports, ensuring precise linkage of expenditures to milestones and deliverables across the two clinic‑bound projects.

Required Qualifications

Advanced knowledge of common organizational or research‑specific computer application programs.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.

Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.

Advanced project management skills.

Thorough knowledge of organizational or initiative processes, protocols and procedures.

Ability to multi‑task with demanding timeframes.

Advanced knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques.

Advanced analytical/problem‑solving skills.

Advanced knowledge of genome editing and delivery technologies.

Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $91,500.00 - $155,000.00. This is a full‑time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.

This is an exempt, monthly‑paid position.

Other Information

This position will be governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Research and Public Service Professionals, represented by the UAW.
