What You’ll Be Doing Under direction of senior staff, you will be responsible for the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of transportation systems, including fixed guideways, highway transit, bicycle, airport, and other facilities. You will supervise the professional transportation engineering staff and coordinate with utilities, land and water companies, and other jurisdictions.
Typical Tasks
Supervise and direct projects in connection with the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of transportation systems.
Supervise the design function, structural analyses and field surveys.
Make traffic engineering studies.
Conduct transit planning and supervise the scheduling of transit operations.
Supervise the preparation of specifications and related documents for bid advertising.
Coordinate technical information exchanges with officials of other governmental jurisdictions, other transportation specialists and the public.
Coordinate with utilities and land and water companies in matters of relocation and rights‑of‑ways.
Coordinate legal assistance in the preparation of resolutions, agreements and other legal documents.
Conduct special studies and perform related work as required.
Ideal Candidate Significant experience in project delivery with a specific focus on existing and new utility service and relocation. You will manage, mentor and train team members that support delivery of projects concerning third‑party utilities as well as municipal water, sewer and storm‑drain systems. You will be able to review plans from third‑party utilities and ensure VTA designers’ deliverables meet local, state and federal requirements.
Qualifications • Training and experience equivalent to graduation from college with major work in engineering and five years professional engineering experience on transportation systems or projects, including assignments demonstrating supervisory abilities.
• Professional Engineer registration in the State of California in a field related to transportation engineering at the time of appointment.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in the design, construction, and operation of transportation systems and facilities; transportation planning principles; design and operation of public transit systems; computer model simulation techniques; structural engineering practices; principles of supervision and training.
• Ability to: plan, direct and supervise the work of others; analyze engineering problems and develop effective solutions; evaluate and monitor consultant performance; make accurate engineering computations; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with stakeholders.
