Vice President for Facilities

Position Purpose Within Dartmouth’s Campus Services, the Vice President for Facilities (VP) is a critical senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, planning, and execution of all aspects related to energy management, capital construction, and facilities maintenance across the institution. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President for Operations, the VP plays a pivotal role in shaping the physical environment and sustainability efforts on campus.
The VP will work collaboratively with senior academic and administrative leaders as well as with the Board of Trustees to develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for the institution’s energy, capital projects, and facilities management, aligning it with the overall mission and goals of the institution. The role requires developing and staffing an integrated, strategically aligned facilities organization that demonstrates a commitment to excellence and service. The VP is responsible for the performance of approximately 340 employees and for managing a $148 million annual operating budget and a $34 million utility budget.
Responsibilities
Build and lead a high‑performing team of professionals, providing guidance, support, and mentorship.
Develop a culture of high performance, accountability, and inclusion to support service delivery across campus.
Use technology, metrics, and key performance indicators to drive continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.
Ensure budgets for energy, capital projects, and facilities are aligned, optimized, and cost‑effective.
Provide regular updates and reports to the SVP for Operations and other stakeholders, and present to the Board of Trustees.
Prioritize safety, accessibility, and functionality in the maintenance and renovation of campus facilities.
Champion sustainability initiatives, fostering environmental responsibility and exploring opportunities for energy conservation and sustainable development.
Enable faculty and students to engage with facilities through research, innovation, and best‑practice sharing.
Maintain regulatory compliance with laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
Plan for succession and depth within the organization.
Foster collaboration with campus constituents, including Real Estate, Residential Life, Athletics, Arts & Sciences, and professional schools.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree plus 6 or more years of experience or a combination of education and experience.
Extensive leadership experience in energy management, capital projects, and facilities management within higher education or a similarly complex organization.
Track record of advancing sustainability goals, including energy conservation and environmentally sensitive construction.
Budget management expertise.
Success advising senior leadership and boards on strategic investments and resource optimization.
Experience leading diverse and collaborative teams.
Ability to engage respectfully with trustees, administration, faculty, students, staff, alumni, and donors.
Exceptional strategic planning, project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Undergraduate degree in engineering, facilities management, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree, ideally in design, architecture, engineering, business, public administration, planning, or a related field.
Understanding of higher education operations and business models.
Experience in a research university environment.
Experience working with unionized staff.
