Organizational Unit Overview
Academic Affairs (AA) is headed by the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, who serves as the institution's Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and is responsible for administering academic policies. AA is comprised of each of the university's colleges, schools, and libraries, along with other academic support and administrative units, to include Learner Operations, Research, Innovation and Engagement, Institutional Planning, Assessment and Research, and Global Affairs. Academic Affairs works collaboratively to strengthen ECU's culture of academic excellence in line with our mission to be a national model for student success, public service, and regional transformation.
Job Duties
The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs will provide leadership to ensure the operational elements of the division of Academic Affairs are well aligned with fulfilling ECU's mission to be a national model for student success, public service, and regional transformation. This position reports directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Vice Provost will assist in overseeing and implementing policies and programs in Academic Affairs Central and collaborate with counterparts at other UNC System Campuses to develop, refine, and implement academic initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
50% Administrative Oversight
- Chief Operating Officer for Academic Affairs overseeing daily operations of the division.
- Coordinate operational arms of Academic Affairs, including Faculty Affairs, Institutional Planning Assessment and Research (IPAR), and Global Affairs.
- Engage with university central functions around personnel and support for financial management.
- Develop and refine budgetary frameworks and evaluate resource distribution across units.
- Align financial strategies with institutional goals and ensure efficient and strategic funding utilization.
- Cultivate a data-informed decision-making culture, guiding assessment, enhancement of academic policies, monitoring student learning outcomes, and contributing to continuous institutional performance improvements.
40% Strategic Leadership
- Collaborate and lead with partners across the ECU campus to pursue excellence in campus policies and processes.
- Serve on behalf of the Provost when needed.
- Work closely with academic deans, department chairs, and senior administrative leaders to foster collaborative relationships driving strategic advancement.
- Identify and pursue opportunities enhancing faculty support systems, improving administrative infrastructure, and elevating the overall quality and effectiveness of academic programs.
10% Other Duties and Special Projects
- Assist the Provost in continuously improving the effectiveness of Academic Affairs, building and leveraging internal and external relationships.
- Lead special projects responding to emerging needs or leveraging new opportunities.
- Collaborate with leadership in the Office of Research and the Office of Innovation and Engagement to cultivate partnerships with regional educational organizations, industry leaders, and community stakeholders expanding the university's impact and visibility.
- Represent the institution in professional organizations, academic consortia, and accreditation agencies to maintain high academic standards and compliance.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Provost.

Minimum Education/Experience
Terminal degree with five years of administrative leadership experience with a broad understanding of campus operations and faculty processes.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Possesses the credentials, experience, and documented achievements appropriate for appointment as a tenured Associate Professor or Professor.
Demonstrated experience or foundational knowledge in Health Sciences disciplines.
