Assistant General Counsel – Construction
The role serves as a strategic legal leader, providing expert guidance on legal, dispute resolution, construction contracts and claims, and other corporate matters that support the company’s continued growth and operational excellence. You will oversee critical legal functions, advise company leadership nationwide, and foster a collaborative, ethical, and compliant work environment.
Essential Functions
Leadership Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted legal advisor to executive leadership and operational teams, providing strategic counsel on compliance, risk mitigation, and best practices.
- Hire, lead, and manage outside counsel, ensuring effective litigation strategy and regulatory compliance.
- Develop and implement policies and training to promote a strong culture of ethics, compliance, and risk awareness.
- Drive proactive risk management strategies, anticipating legal challenges.
- Foster cross‑functional collaboration with operations, HR, safety, finance, and business development teams.
Litigation and Dispute Resolution
- Lead and manage a team of lawyers handling all company litigation, arbitration, mediation, and pre‑litigation dispute resolution.
- Review and respond to legal claims, subpoenas, general inquiries, and discovery requests.
- Serve as primary liaison with outside counsel and internal Risk Department for active litigation matters.
- Provide timely, strategic advice on potential and actual disputes and risk management.
- Develop and implement dispute resolution strategies aimed at minimizing risk.
Contracts & Risk Management
- Oversee the Contracts Administration Group, managing review and negotiation of approximately 5,000 agreements annually, including master service agreements, subcontracts, purchase/work orders, NDAs, government contracts, and joint venture agreements.
- Partner with legal business partners and operation teams to continuously improve contract management processes.
- Participate in training and internal after‑action reviews.
Leadership and Development
- Manage and mentor a team of lawyers, paralegals, and other professionals.
- Promote an environment of collaboration, accountability, and adaptability.

Basic Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 10+ years of progressive legal experience, preferably in construction law, litigation, and regulatory oversight.
- Experience managing people, leading legal teams, and advising executive leadership.
Preferred Qualification
- Local to the KC Metropolitan area.
- Background in AEC, manufacturing, industrial, or similar environments.
