Hadron Energy specializes in Micro Modular Reactor (MMR) development, design, and research based in the San Francisco Bay Area. As the leading MMR developer, Hadron Energy is building factory-produced, transportable microreactors that provide 24/7 carbon‑free power for data centers, government facilities, industrial sites, and remote communities. Our mission is to create a brighter, healthier, and more equitable energy future.

This is a full‑time on‑site role for a Materials Engineer , based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The position is ideal for candidates with strong technical expertise in materials science, metallurgy, and thermal‑mechanical analysis who are passionate about advancing safe, durable, and high‑performance materials for next‑generation nuclear systems.

The Materials Engineer will support the design, testing, and qualification of structural and functional materials used in Hadron Energy’s micro modular reactor (MMR) systems. This individual will collaborate with nuclear, mechanical, and thermal engineers to ensure materials meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements under high‑temperature, radiation, and corrosive environments.

You will play a key role in developing the material foundations that enable Hadron’s reactors to achieve reliability, longevity, and manufacturability at commercial scale—bridging the gap between material science innovation and practical engineering application.

Responsibilities

  • Lead material selection, evaluation, and qualification for components operating under nuclear, thermal, and mechanical stress conditions
  • Conduct material property analysis, testing, and characterization , including tensile, creep, fatigue, and corrosion testing
  • Collaborate with design and structural teams to ensure materials meet performance, safety, and lifecycle requirements
  • Support the development of welding, joining, and fabrication processes for high‑temperature alloys and pressure‑boundary materials
  • Interface with suppliers, laboratories, and research institutions to source and validate advanced materials and coatings
  • Contribute to the design of radiation‑tolerant and corrosion‑resistant materials for reactor and balance‑of‑plant systems
  • Develop and maintain material databases, specifications, and test plans in alignment with ASME, ASTM, and NRC standards
  • Support component and subsystem testing programs, analyzing results and recommending design or process improvements
  • Collaborate with QA and regulatory teams to ensure material traceability, documentation, and quality compliance
  • Research emerging materials technologies applicable to nuclear and energy systems (e.g., ceramics, composites, advanced steels)

Qualifications & Skillsets

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (PhD preferred for senior roles)
  • 5+ years of experience in materials development, selection, or qualification , preferably within nuclear, aerospace, or energy industries
  • Strong understanding of metallurgy, thermal‑mechanical behavior, and material degradation mechanisms
  • Experience with high‑temperature alloys, stainless steels, ceramics, and corrosion‑resistant materials
  • Familiarity with ASME Section III, ASTM standards, and nuclear materials codes and regulations
  • Hands‑on experience with material testing methods, microstructural analysis (SEM, EDS), and nondestructive evaluation (NDE)
  • Knowledge of radiation effects, oxidation, and embrittlement phenomena in metallic and nonmetallic materials
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, with strong attention to detail and documentation discipline
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering and research teams
  • Passion for innovation, clean energy, and developing materials that enable the next generation of nuclear technology
