The Team You Will Join

We are seeking a highly motivated attorney to join MetLife’s Government & Legal Affairs department. The position is in the Regulatory, Broker-Dealer & Reinsurance Unit of the US Insurance Law section of Legal Affairs.

The Opportunity

The AVP & Assistant General Counsel will support our U.S. Business by providing strategic legal counsel on insurance and broker‑dealer regulatory matters, ensuring compliance with state, federal, and industry requirements. This role also serves as the legal officer for MetLife’s Broker‑Dealer affiliate, overseeing broker‑dealer governance and regulatory obligations.

The candidate must provide excellent legal advice and representation, demonstrate discretion and judgment, stay current with changing legal climate, and exhibit strong commitment to growth.

Responsibilities

  • Handle regulatory matters for MetLife’s Broker‑Dealer affiliate, including FINRA compliance, written supervisory procedures, registration requirements, e‑communications, form filings, compensation, financial reporting, third‑party relationships, advertising, internal audits, and litigation.
  • Manage regulatory examinations across multiple legal entities and lines of business, liaising with regulators, tracking requests, drafting responses, and managing remediation documentation.
  • Handle complex regulatory matters such as escalated customer complaints, targeted investigations, and negotiation of consent orders, fines, and penalties in partnership with stakeholders.
  • Advise internal clients on risks posed by regulatory requirements and identify risk‑mitigation opportunities to enhance processes and business practices.
  • Proactively advise on current and future regulatory requirements related to the above matters.

What You Need to Succeed (Required Qualifications)

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school
  • Excellent academic credentials
  • Admission to the New York bar
  • 10+ years of experience, including Broker‑Dealer or FINRA experience, reflecting a record of accomplishment
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Superior oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to build relationships across the company and with regulators
  • Attention to detail, sense of urgency, and ability to handle substantial workload effectively
  • Willingness to partner with colleagues and business partners to contribute to success of the US Insurance Law Section, Government & Legal Affairs, and MetLife
  • Ability to thrive as a team member and individual contributor in a high‑performance culture
  • Creative input in continuous improvement of policies and procedures of the Law Department and business partners

  • Regulatory exam and investigation experience

Location Expectation: Hybrid role requiring a minimum of 3 days per week in office.

Salary Range: $161,000 - $214,600. This role may also be eligible for annual short‑term incentive compensation and stock‑based long‑term incentives. All incentives and benefits are subject to the applicable plan terms.
