UNC Health – Hillsborough Hospital is hiring New Graduate Nurses to join our 2nd floor Family Medicine Unit, Summer 2026. The 2nd Floor Family Medicine Unit is a 20‑bed unit that cares for a varied patient population, predominantly family medicine patients, as well as observation, extended recovery from PACU, and other medical‑surgical patients.

This is a 36‑hour per week, rotating position with flexible self‑scheduling. The role is intended for a new‑graduate RN who is in their final semester of nursing school or who graduated within the past 12 months and has worked as an RN for less than 6 months. Applicants must hold a nursing license in North Carolina and provide a resume with clinical rotation hours as well as a cover letter indicating their primary area of clinical interest.

New Graduate Nurses are part of the UNC Medical Center Residency Program (NRP), a year‑long program that supports transition from academia to practice and provides mentored clinical relationships.

Responsibilities

Participate in identifying and meeting learning needs of self, attend education programs, and use patient education materials as appropriate.

Identify expected patient outcomes, seek guidance for plan of care revisions, and collaborate with interdisciplinary team to evaluate patient care.

Demonstrate competence in care of patients with complex problems, perform bedside point‑of‑care testing, and prioritize care according to patient/family needs.

Develop goals for professional growth, collaborate on unit goals and performance improvement activities, and promote cost‑effective care.

Recognize data from complex situations to determine priorities and integrate physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs into care plans.

Collaborate with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care, leveraging multidisciplinary resources and addressing cultural and ethnic issues.

Read relevant journals, bring ideas and questions to staff for assessment of applicability.

Education Requirements

Graduation from a school of professional nursing.

If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment and obtain a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Nursing within seven years, or a Master’s degree with a major in Nursing within that timeframe.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the day of clinical care.

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.

Professional Experience Requirements

No prior experience required.
