Greater Farallones Association (GFA)
is the nonprofit partner of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries. GFA conducts joint research, conservation, and education to support healthy ecosystems in the Sanctuaries, which comprise one of the most diverse and bountiful marine environments in the world, an area of 4,581 square miles off the northern and central California coast. With approximately 30 staff members, GFA is supported by a diverse mix of government grants, program service contracts, private philanthropy, and donated services. GFA has an annual operating budget of approximately $5 million and is co‑located in the National Marine Sanctuary office in a beautiful historic building on Crissy Field in the Presidio, with an additional field office at Bodega Marine Lab.
Position Description The Aviation Partnership Specialist for the Seabird Protection Network (SPN) is responsible for building and maintaining partnerships with civilian and military aviators and airport managers to encourage them to avoid disturbing sensitive seabird colonies while flying. Supervised by the SPN Program Coordinator, this role is ideal for candidates with existing knowledge and familiarity with the California aviation community. The specialist will design and deliver presentations, distribute outreach materials, and collaborate with the SPN team to develop messages and strategies that inform pilots about how to identify and avoid disturbing seabird colonies.
Job Duties
Prepare and give in‑person presentations to aviators at flight schools, aviation clubs, military bases, and airports.
Build and maintain partnerships within the aviation community, including new partnerships with the FAA Safety Team and civilian airports in the greater Bay Area.
Distribute physical outreach materials to partners, including maps, posters, and brochures.
Ensure that partners digitally disseminate SPN materials, such as an approach video, through e‑newsletters and on airport/pilot club websites.
Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of outreach materials and messages through expertise and soliciting feedback from partners.
Attend targeted events (e.g., air shows, aviation conferences) to distribute products and speak with attendees, or contact event organizers to provide outreach information and materials.
Meet with existing and new program partners in person, over video, and on the phone.
Meet regularly with SPN program staff.
Maintain a spreadsheet tracking partner contacts, product distribution, and outreach events.
Analyze program data to determine the best places to focus outreach efforts.
Research and draft material to include in monthly pilot newsletters and social media posts.
Assist with or lead the development of an online training module for pilots.
Write situation reports (SIT reports) after outreach events.
Track disturbance incidents in the online portal.
Mail packets to pilots after seabird disturbances.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Demonstrated knowledge of the civilian or military aviation community in California, with a strong preference for familiarity with aviation activities in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Aviation experience through one or more of the following: air traffic control, airport operations or management, flight instruction, civil or military aviation, or comparable aviation‑related roles.
Experience with fixed‑wing or helicopter aviation; the position does not involve drone operations.
Experience in designing and giving presentations, and comfort with public speaking.
Knowledge of how flight regulations and procedures affect civilian aviation, especially with regard to airspace in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Experience in marketing, public outreach, and/or campaigning.
Experience in Google Workspace.
Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
Ability to work at a computer for up to eight hours per day, with breaks.
Candidate must be based in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area.
Pass a mandatory federal background check and defensive driving course.
Have a valid driver’s license, proof of automobile insurance, a clean driving record, and access to reliable transportation to and from the office in the Presidio, San Francisco, as well as a personal vehicle for field outreach. Mileage will be reimbursed.
Employee Status and Benefits This remote, part‑time position is for no more than 24 hours per week. The starting pay rate is between $35 and $45 per hour, depending on experience. Candidates at the upper pay range must have significant aviation experience and be skilled presenters. Health care benefits are not offered for this position.
