Uro-Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Oncology Team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust as a Uro‑Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) for a 12‑month temporary post/secondment.
The Uro‑oncology CNS will provide specialist, high‑quality expert nursing care and support for patients (and their carers) with urological cancers, delivering holistic, patient‑centred care in line with their changing health‑care needs. They will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, acting as the patient’s advocate to help ensure the best outcomes as the patient’s key worker throughout their diagnostic and treatment pathway. They will deliver on‑treatment reviews for patients with uro‑oncological conditions, and provide specialist knowledge in assessing, diagnosing and managing complications of treatment and/or disease.
The applicant should have specialist skills, knowledge and experience in oncology and possess excellent communication skills.

Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities Key Duties
Be a point of contact/key worker for patients with urological malignancy undergoing SACT or in the advanced stage of their disease.
Work autonomously, maintain a caseload of patients and demonstrate practice in holistic needs assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care promoting the philosophy of person‑centred care for patients with urological cancers.
Provide nurse‑led clinics for uro‑oncology patients undergoing treatment, assessing, diagnosing and managing complications of treatment and disease.
Utilise advanced communication skills when discussing diagnosis, prognosis and treatment options for urological malignancies with sensitivity and expertise.
Assess educational and information needs for patients and families, and devise plans to ensure their needs are met.

Visit ward areas including ED and review patients where appropriate, providing leadership, support and guidance to staff in monitoring the planning, delivery and evaluation of individualised specialist care.
Act as an advocate for patients within the department to ensure a patient‑orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS plan and relevant guidelines.

Participate in case conferences in relation to the management of patients, ensuring the coordination of ongoing care.

Utilise advanced communication skills in supporting patients and their carers during the delivery of bad news such as disease progression, terminal illness and in the event of death.
Promote collaborative working relationships and effective communication between all members of the trust, community and tertiary services/MDT to improve the management and outcomes of the patient group.

Regularly discuss patients with the surgical urology CNS team identifying specific patients that may require additional support that are entering the SACT or advanced malignancy phase of their pathway.

Provide direct, highly specialised care and advice to patients within the urology cancer nursing service demonstrating advanced clinical skills and expert knowledge for those undergoing SACT or with advanced urological malignancies.
Knowledge of SACT available for the treatment of urological cancers, including understanding how the treatment is delivered and common side effects.
Knowledge of advanced urological cancers and the potential complications relating to the disease, including symptom management strategies such as appropriate medical management or specialist referral.
Utilise advanced health assessment skills and non‑medical prescribing to support recognising and managing patients with adverse symptoms related to their malignancy and/or treatment.

Organise own work and manage caseload and practice, identifying and maintaining supportive networks for self and other staff members.
Be fully aware of national targets and corporate, divisional and directorate objectives in conjunction with the MDT and use the available resources to meet these targets.
