Hospice Executive Director
Job Purpose
To administer the day to day operations of the programs and implement the policies of the Governing Body.
Key Responsibilities
Implements partner relations practices necessary to establish a positive company‑partner relationship and promote a high level of partner morale.
Keeps supervisor informed of daily activities and issues. Proposes solutions to all issues.
Maintains effective relationships with management staff, employees, and the general public.
Organizes the agency in accordance with the laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of a hospice in the state where the agency is licensed.
Organizes and directs the agency’s ongoing functions; maintains liaison among the Governing Body, the group of Professional Personnel and the staff.
Establishes administrative procedures and maintains records to provide the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, and outside agencies with current information required for operational decisions.
Facilitates system for communication among the hospice staff, hospice care team, and patients/family units and/or legal guardians/representatives when applicable.
Maintains and implements policies and procedures for provision of hospice care and services, as well as policies related to management, operation, and evaluation of the hospice’s performance.
Facilitates involvement of the IDG in policy development.
Responsible for recruitment and employment of qualified staff in sufficient numbers for the provision of care and services.
Participates in the development and implementation of an orientation program for each partner to include agency services and specific job duties.
Responsible for partner oversight in regards to compliance with the completion of annual training and education programs.
Follows all company policies and procedures, state and federal laws and regulations, and reports violations to the appropriate supervisor.
Carries out all duties with a “Committed to Caring” attitude and in accordance with the company’s mission, vision, and philosophy.
Maintains confidentiality of company information.
Demonstrates integrity at all times.
Able to respond to change productively and handle additional projects as assigned.
Able to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this job (with or without reasonable accommodation) without posing specific or current risk of substantial harm to the health and safety of self and others.
Supervises and participates in the development and implementation of Performance Improvement, utilization Review, and Peer Review Program of the agency.
Performs other administrative tasks as assigned by the Governing Body.
Personnel Administration
Employs professional administrative and other qualified staff to meet the needs of the patients admitted.
Supervises and evaluates all professional and administrative staff.
Develops and implements personnel records on all staff members.
Provides orientation, training and continuing education of the staff.
Responsible for monitoring staff compliance with completion of annual training and education programs.
Contracts for all services not provided by paid staff.
Financial Administration
Develops and implements budget and ensures the following responsibilities are fulfilled:
Submits monthly financial reports to the Regional Director.
Prepares and submits annual financial reports to the Governing Body and membership.
Maintains all payroll records in compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.
Ensures compliance with the agency’s budgeted financial and census goals.
Advises the Governing Body regarding needs concerning insurance for property and professional liability, and maintains such policies as directed.
Public Relations
Directs community relations for United Hospice and serves as its representative on civic and professional boards.
Serves as a liaison with the State and National Hospice organizations.
Serves as a liaison with the Governing Body, Executive Directory, and staff.
Ensures the accuracy of public information materials and activities.
Ensures compliance with the agency Start of Care goals.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Participates in center/agency surveys and any subsequently required reports.
Attends and participates in continuing educational programs to keep abreast of changes in the field and maintain current license/certification.
Attends mandatory inservices.
Honors patients/residents’ rights to fair and equitable treatment, self‑determination, individuality, privacy, property, and civil rights.
Complies with corporate compliance program.
Reports job‑related functions tasks involving occupational hazards.
Follows established safety regulations, including fire protection, smoking regulations, infection control, etc.
Performs other related duties as necessary and as directed by supervisor.
Minimum Education Required
Holds a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in a healthcare field, human services administrative area, or has served as a hospice administrator under a state‑approved hospice and home care program or has equivalent administrative experience.
Minimum Experience Required
Minimum of two years hospice management experience.
Minimum Licensure/Certification Required By Law
Current professional license as applicable. Current driver’s license and automobile liability insurance.
Additional Qualifications (Preferred)
Orientation to United Hospice and any other training that may be necessary.
Successful completion of related field.
Skills in supervisory relationships and communication.
Ability to work a flexible schedule.
Positive criminal history check, Office of the Inspector General Sanction Check, and licensure validations.
Commitment to and understanding of the hospice concept.
Experience in supervision, both written and oral communication.
Successful orientation and training participation.
Proficiency with computer software for office use; well organized and able to set priorities.
Reliable attendance, punctuality, and professional appearance.
Excellent interpersonal communication, warm and friendly greeting, helpful caring demeanor.
