Position Description The Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) seasonal Interpretation tour assistant is responsible for supporting live interpretation efforts to welcome and serve visitors with a wide range of specific needs, accessibility accommodations, etc., and provide an engaging experience at the Garden. The assistant will provide hands‑on support to staff and volunteer Garden Guides for tours and other interpretive programs including Discovery Garden and Access Initiatives.
Schedule
February–June & September–November:
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, 12–3 p.m.
July–August:
Thursdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Plus additional days to be determined.
Responsibilities
Support volunteer Garden Guide tours with listening devices and assistance.
Help maintain, store, and organize listening devices.
Greet and welcome visitors and groups to tours and distribute listening devices.
Install updated tour signs and information.
Assist with Garden Guide volunteer continuing education workshops and trainings.
Learn BBG tour information and be able to lead a 60‑minute tour if needed.
Prepare and organize program materials for Access and Discovery Garden programs.
Support the Interpretation department including Discovery Garden, Access Initiative programs, and weekend Garden staff as needed.
Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.
Qualifications
Experience working for a cultural organization
Able to work independently and on a team, exercising punctuality, reliability, and flexibility
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Comfortable with public speaking to all audiences
Comfortable working outdoors and in glasshouse conditions
Able to traverse the Garden for an hour or more in various weather conditions
Friendly, outgoing, and flexible
Proactive with the public and volunteers
Love of plants and gardens and the natural world
Competent with Microsoft Office applications
Willing to learn BBG’s volunteer computer database program–Volgistics
Understanding of Americans with Disabilities Act
Able to adjust work schedule hours and days if needed
