Founding Backend Engineer (LLM Agents)
LedgerUp — San Francisco, CA (Onsite, 5 days/week)
About LedgerUp LedgerUp is building AI teammates for billing and accounts receivable, automating the entire contract-to-cash workflow so finance teams can stop chasing payments and focus on growth. Our platform handles invoicing, collections, reconciliation, and integrations with financial systems, replacing manual finance ops with reliable AI-driven workflows.
We’re already generating high six-figure revenue with 30+ customers live, seeing strong product-market pull in a massive, historically underserved finance ops market that’s primed for AI disruption.
LedgerUp has raised a $2M Seed round and is operating with strong momentum, clear customer demand, and a defined path to the next round.

Recently pivoted in January 2024 and executing quickly with real customer traction
Very lean, founding-level engineering environment with outsized ownership and impact
High bar for ownership, speed, and customer obsession
The Role We’re hiring a
Founding Backend Engineer
to architect and build the core systems powering our LLM-driven finance automation platform. This is a hands‑on role with end‑to‑end ownership: from system design to production deployment, working directly with founders and real customer workloads.
You’ll be designing and scaling LLM‑powered agents, core APIs, and backend infrastructure that automate mission‑critical financial workflows.
What You’ll Do
Architect and build backend systems for LLM-based agents used in billing and A/R workflows
Design and implement memory systems, retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG), and agent orchestration
Build scalable, reliable Python services and APIs used by production customers
Work closely with founders to translate customer pain into shipped product quickly
Own systems end to end, from design to deployment and iteration in production
Requirements Experience
Up to 5 years of backend software engineering experience
Previous founder or early‑stage startup engineering experience
Experience at a late‑stage startup and/or a major tech company
Technical Skills
Strong backend engineering experience in Python
Hands‑on experience building and working with LLM agents
Experience with memory storage, vector databases, and RAG‑based retrieval systems
Ability to design production‑grade systems that are reliable and scalable
Soft Skills
Takes full ownership and drives work independently
Comfortable operating with ambiguity in an early‑stage environment
Strong bias toward action and shipping
Work Environment
Onsite in San Francisco, 5 days per week
Fast‑paced, high‑ownership, founding‑level role
Traits We’re Not Looking For
Not hungry or unwilling to grind
Preference for highly structured, low‑ownership environments
Why This Role Is Compelling
Join as a founding backend engineer with meaningful equity upside
Work on real, revenue‑generating AI systems used by paying customers
Direct influence on architecture, product direction, and company trajectory
Opportunity to help define how AI transforms finance operations at scale
If you’re excited about building LLM‑powered systems from the ground up, working closely with founders, and owning critical infrastructure in a fast‑growing startup, LedgerUp is an opportunity to have outsized impact early.
