The Data Department The Data Team drives insight, innovation, and trust across the company, collaborating across engineering, analytics, machine learning, and product to transform data into reliable intelligence.
Role Overview The Senior Manager of Data Engineering leads a team that owns ingestion, transformation, and serving pipelines to our data warehouse. You will set architectural direction, roadmap execution, and cross‑functional alignment to ensure data is reliable, accessible, and timely, translating business strategy into data initiatives and fostering technical maturity across the organization.
Responsibilities
Own team roadmap, prioritize, plan, and deliver initiatives across ingest, transformation, serving, and observability domains.
Supervise and mentor senior, staff, & principal data engineers, providing career development, recruitment, and resource planning.
Guide and approve major architectural decisions, ensuring alignment with cross‑team standards and long‑term scalability.
Drive cross‑functional coordination with product, analytics, ML, operations, compliance, and infrastructure.
Set and monitor key metrics (pipeline reliability, latency, throughput, data quality SLAs).
Lead incident retrospectives, root‑cause analysis, and continuous improvement for data operations.
Define and evolve data engineering vision and architecture across batch, streaming, real‑time, modeling, metadata, and lineage.
Decide technology direction, evaluate new tools, and enforce best practices around quality, observability, governance, and security.
Ensure robustness, resilience, and monitoring of critical data systems with alerting and rollback procedures.
Lead on‑call and support rotations for production data systems.
Oversee data validation, anomaly detection, schema changes, and release procedures.
Ensure compliance with regulatory and security requirements (PII, encryption, audit logging, access controls).
Communicate strategy, progress, trade‑offs, and risks to executives and non‑technical stakeholders.
Translate business requirements into data specifications, schemas, SLAs, and deliverables.
Act as liaison for data engineering across teams to align priorities and manage dependencies.
Minimum Qualifications
10+ years in data engineering, software engineering, or related roles.
3+ years of people management or leadership experience.
Deep technical expertise in large‑scale data systems (ingestion, transformation, serving).
Hands‑on experience with data engineering tools, frameworks, and platforms.
Broad experience in data modeling, schema evolution, and query performance optimization.
Experience designing or evolving data platforms and shared infrastructure.
Strong understanding of software engineering best practices (modularity, testability, CI/CD).
Track record of architecting for reliability, scalability, fault tolerance, observability, and maintainability.
Experience with metadata management, data governance, lineage, and data catalogs.
Effective cross‑functional communication, influencing senior stakeholders.
Proven ability to hire, grow, and retain engineering talent.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with crypto, financial services, trading, markets, or exchange systems.
Experience with blockchain/Web3 data (blocks, transactions, on‑chain indexing).
Experience with infrastructure as code, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines.
Hands‑on experience managing Databricks on AWS.
Experience in regulated data environments.
Experience managing hybrid, distributed, or remote teams.
