We are seeking a visionary Director of Software Development to lead the evolution and scale of Aza, Amazon's generative AI‑powered employee assistant that is transforming how millions of Amazonians work every day. In this role, you will spearhead the technical strategy and execution for Aza—Amazon's single employee workday assistant that has achieved 65% adoption across our global workforce in just 18 months. You'll drive the development of cutting‑edge conversational AI systems leveraging AWS technologies including Amazon Q, Bedrock, and Nova to revolutionize employee productivity and experience across 67 countries.

You will own the product strategy, technical architecture, and software development with global engineering teams building the next generation of Aza's capabilities. Your leadership will transform how Amazonians access information, complete tasks, and navigate their workday through intelligent, agentic AI systems that connect Amazon's vast knowledge ecosystem—from Inside Amazon and Wiki to IT Services, GREF, Learn, and beyond.

This role offers the unique opportunity to partner with cutting‑edge AWS teams (Amazon Q Business Suite, Bedrock), AGI teams (Nova), and Alexa while driving measurable business impact through AI‑powered automation and efficiency gains.

Agentic AI Workflows: Build autonomous systems that proactively complete tasks and workflows on behalf of employees, driving measurable PXT business savings

Advanced RAG & Knowledge Systems: Enhance Aza's ability to intelligently retrieve and synthesize information from Amazon's vast knowledge ecosystem using Amazon Q

Multi‑Agent Orchestration: Leverage AWS Bedrock to coordinate specialized AI agents that handle complex, multi‑step employee requests

Voice & Multimodal Capabilities: Integrate Nova‑powered voice interactions and expand Aza's modalities for more natural employee engagement

Predictive & Proactive Assistance: Build systems that anticipate employee needs before they arise, providing just‑in‑time support during critical moments

Enterprise AI at Scale: Solve unique challenges of deploying conversational AI to millions of users across 67 countries while maintaining security, privacy, and compliance

Cross‑Amazon AI Collaboration: Partner with AWS (Amazon Q, Bedrock) and AGI teams (Nova, Alexa) to shape the future of enterprise AI and influence product development

Key Job Responsibilities

Lead AI Product & Technical Strategy: Drive the vision and roadmap for Aza as Amazon's preferred workday assistant, serving millions of Amazonians across corporate, hourly, manager, and candidate personas

Architect Next‑Generation AI Systems: Oversee architectural decisions for Aza's multi‑agent orchestration platform using AWS Bedrock, RAG with Amazon Q, and Nova voice capabilities, ensuring enterprise‑grade security

Drive Agentic AI & Automation: Scale Aza's workflow automation suite to deliver measurable PXT business savings through autonomous task handling and intelligent employee support

Scale Multi‑Channel Experience: Evolve Aza's presence across A to Z homepage, Slack, mobile app, and web extension to provide seamless, context‑aware assistance

Expand Knowledge Integration: Enhance Aza's connectivity to Amazon's internal knowledge sources (Inside Amazon, Wiki, IT Services, GREF, Learn, Phone Tool) while combining internal and external data

Partner with AWS & AI Teams: Collaborate with AWS teams (Amazon Q, Bedrock) and AGI teams (Nova, Alexa) to leverage AI innovations and influence product development

Lead Global Engineering Teams: Direct motivated engineering teams across global locations, fostering innovation and rapid experimentation

Drive Business Impact: Establish KPIs through PXT leadership mechanisms, demonstrating impact on productivity and efficiency

Enable Support: Deliver personalized assistance across 250+ languages for Amazon's workforce

A Day in the Life You’ll lead strategic AI discussions with PXT leadership while fostering rapid innovation across your teams. Your role spans from deep technical conversations about multi‑agent Gen AI architectures to driving critical business metrics and reviews. Working at the forefront of AI innovation, you’ll partner with AWS teams on Amazon Q integration, collaborate with Nova on voice capabilities, and engage with Alexa engineers on conversational AI. You’ll shape Aza’s three‑year roadmap, balance cutting‑edge AI development with immediate employee value, review agentic workflow designs, and keep pulse on emerging AI technologies to enhance Aza's capabilities.

About the Team A to Z delivers centralized HR support for all Amazon employees, with Aza serving as our flagship AI assistant that revolutionizes how Amazonians access information and complete tasks. Achieving 65% global adoption in 18 months, Aza leverages AWS technologies (Amazon Q, Bedrock, Nova) to provide intelligent support across multiple platforms. Connected to Amazon's internal knowledge ecosystem and accessible via A to Z homepage, Slack, mobile, and Chrome extension, Aza is evolving from a conversational assistant to an agentic AI platform. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent, or experience leading or developing high‑quality, enterprise‑scale software products using a structured system development lifecycle

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $264,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $350,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
