Overview The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix is seeking a vice chair for the Department of Neurosurgery. This is an opportunity for an outstanding leader with a national reputation as an accomplished academician, clinician, educator and collaborator.

The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking to strengthen its existing programs and to expand its clinical, educational and research activities as part of its contribution to the College’s mission. The vice chair works in strategic consultation with the department chair, the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education, the Office of Graduate Medical Education and the Translational Research Office. As vice chair, the candidate will be a nurturing mentor to faculty and trainees, providing ongoing guidance and support of their professional development.

The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in the Department of Neurosurgery, actively participate in teaching, clinical service and scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement departmental education vision and infrastructure.

Develop and implement departmental research vision and infrastructure focusing on clinical trials, grantsmanship and original research.

Build internal and external relationships to inspire and promote academic collaborations across the health system.

Promote and provide a research and teaching environment of the highest quality and integrity.

Foster programs of national distinction through innovation and collaboration.

Mentor medical students, residents, fellows and faculty.

Engage in teaching and research activities for students, residents and fellows.

Participate on appropriate department and/or College committees as well as professional organizations, as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Evidence of ability to build relationships with healthcare partners.

Excellence in recruiting, mentoring and developing of faculty, staff, trainees and students.

Evidence of successful program building.

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess an MD or DO or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.

Be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the associate professor level or higher.

Be board certified in Neurological Surgery and be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.

Be eligible for medical staff membership at Banner – University Phoenix.

Exhibit a track record of administrative experience (e.g., program director, center/section director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Have a track record of national distinction in clinical trials, NIH funding or industry grants.

Have experience serving on education curriculum committees.

Demonstrate leadership in an academic department of Neurosurgery.
