Job Summary
Location: Emergency Department / Inpatient
The Clinical Social Worker II or III (LCSW) is responsible for psychosocial assessment, crisis intervention, counseling, brief therapeutic interventions, consultation, education, community linkages, supportive services, and facilitating plans of care through the healthcare continuum for patients, families, and staff. The role focuses on high‑risk populations and acts as a consultant to the clinical team, service lines, and other departments, while participating in program development and quality improvement initiatives.
The Social Worker provides therapeutic support to patients and families of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital – Oakland, coordinates resources and services in response to psychosocial needs, and collaborates with the care team to support timely, safe discharges and meet continuum‑of‑care needs within fiscal constraints. Practice aligns with UCSF’s mission statement: Caring, Healing, Teaching, Discovering; and the values statement of Everyday PRIDE: Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, Excellence.
Advanced clinical knowledge and skills differentiate the CSW III from the CSW II, incorporating leadership activities, advanced program planning, educational program provision, clinical supervision, and broader consultation to the clinical team, other departments, and the community.

Salary range is performance‑based and subject to additional approval per UC policy.
Salary ranges:
CSW II: $59.46 – $72.51 per hour CSW III: $64.00 – $78.06 per hour

Department Description
At UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, Clinical Social Workers support patients and families through hospitalization, illness, or injury, providing psychosocial support across the continuum of care. The team reduces health disparities through a trauma‑informed, anti‑racist approach.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree from a CSWE‑accredited school of Social Work
Current California State License of Clinical Social Work in good standing (CSW III)
Experience in healthcare, mental health, or child protection working with children and families
Experience with crisis de‑escalation and trauma‑informed care
Knowledge and abilities essential to successfully perform duties
Resourcefulness, effective written and oral communication, diplomacy, and organization/analytic skills
Self‑directed, assertive, and creative problem‑solving, systems planning, and patient‑care management in a high‑volume environment
Effective collaboration with interdisciplinary teams
Proficient with text/pager, telephone, computer, and internet use
Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with pediatric patients
Second language proficiency (Spanish)
License/Certification
Current California State License of Clinical Social Work in good standing (CSW III)
