Engineer II - Software (Platform)
Microchip's Government Systems group is seeking a skilled, detail‑focused engineer with a strong background in product build to contribute to R&D programs in the field of timing and communications systems. This hands‑on technical position is located in Boulder, Colorado. The role is critical to the long‑term health and security of our product, ensuring that our operating system remains up to date, secure, and maintainable.
Responsibilities You will be responsible for managing OS-level updates, addressing CVEs, and driving automation in our build and release processes. You will also maintain documentation for OS update processes, perform integration testing, debug low‑level system issues, and collaborate with product and security teams.
Requirements / Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a similar degree from an accredited university and 2.5‑5 years of professional software engineering experience.
Own and manage the process for updating the Red Hat Linux operating system used in our products.
Track and integrate upstream patches, including critical CVE/security fixes.
Collaborate with product and security teams to evaluate and respond to OS‑level vulnerabilities.
Automate OS builds and testing processes using scripting or CI/CD tools.
Strong scripting skills (Bash, Python, or similar).
Maintain documentation for OS update processes and compliance requirements.
Perform integration testing to validate new OS builds on target hardware.
Comfortable debugging low‑level system issues and working closely with hardware teams.
Troubleshoot system‑level issues across build, boot, and runtime phases.
Solid understanding of Linux networking (interfaces, routing, firewalls, tools like ip, netstat, tcpdump).
Proficiency with distributed source control libraries and workflows.
US citizenship.
Active TS/SCI clearance or ability to obtain one.
Additional Desired Qualifications
Linux build experience with Yocto Project (BitBake, layers, recipes, meta‑layers, etc.).
Knowledge of kernel configuration, device trees, and bootloaders (e.g., U‑Boot).
Experience with secure boot and device provisioning.

Pay Range We offer a total compensation package that ranks among the best in the industry. It consists of competitive base pay, restricted stock units, and quarterly bonus payments. In addition to these components, our package includes health benefits that begin day one, retirement savings plans, and an industry‑leading ESPP program with a 2‑year look‑back feature. The annual base salary range for this position, which could be performed in Colorado, is $64,480–$128,000.* *Range is dependent on numerous factors including job location, skills and experience.
