Distinguishing Characteristics Of The Class The Public Safety Cadet for the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office provides administrative support for operations at the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office while participating in law enforcement training programs. This position offers exposure to the diverse functions and responsibilities of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office, serving as an entry-level role for individuals aspiring to a career in public safety and law enforcement.
Illustrative Example Of Work
Participates in on-the-job training to include but not limited to, communications, first aid, community engagement, firearm and use of force familiarization courses, and the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)
Assist in Alexandria Adult Detention Center (ADC) inventory controls
Receiving/issuing supplies
Assist with Inmate Management Meetings (IMT)
Run criminal histories / wanted checks for ADC access
Help keep master ADC access list up to date and distribute it appropriately
Assist with inmate tablet maintenance and distribution
Scan major incident reports into OneDrive
Assist with report tracking
Review inmate tablet communication
Help support inmate property management
Assist with collection of accreditation documentation
Assist with emergency equipment checks
Checks and tracks cleaning chemicals
Inputs inmate visitation sign-up sheets and schedules visits into the Jail Management System
Enters visitor information into the Jail Management System
Enter program and hair care services information into the Jail Management System
Checks and responds to emails
Participates in community engagement activities
Reads and reviews general orders, the inmate handbook, accreditation standards, and standard operating procedures, including post orders
Performs related work as required
Essential Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Ability to comprehend the fundamentals of law enforcement; ability to learn to write accurate, concise reports; ability to maintain effective relationships with fellow employees and the public; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to maintain a high level of ethical standards; ability to demonstrate a high level of integrity and be truthful at all times.
Minimum & Additional Requirements High School Diploma or GED; some experience involving meeting and dealing with people under varying circumstances; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; good character and background requirements; employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence.
Preferred Qualifications Attending an accredited college or university as a full-time or part-time undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral student with at least 24 credits earned. Must be in good academic standing at the enrolled college or university.
Necessary Special Requirements Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien eligible for U.S. citizenship. Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation, DMV record check, and polygraph examination. Must, within 6 months of reaching age 21, meet all eligibility requirements for Deputy Sheriff I and be selected for employment as a Deputy Sheriff I; Must be within 90 days of their 18th birthday, or already age 18, on the date of application to begin the selection process. Public Safety Cadets must be 18 to 20 years of age at the date of their appointment.
