Tesla Motors, Inc.
Sr. High Voltage Battery Mechatronics Test Engineer
Tesla Motors, Inc., Fremont, California, us, 94537
What to Expect
We are looking to hire early‑career Test Engineers with mechatronics experience for our Hardware Testing team. As a HV battery test engineer, you will work with a passionate and multi‑disciplinary group of engineers while learning how to build and use hardware, firmware, and software solutions to validate Tesla vehicle battery products to rigorous internal and automotive‑industry standards. This role influences the design of the product through reliability risk identification and testing starting at early concept phases, going through product development and launch, and continuing post launch. The candidate will spend their time developing test plans, designing and automating test infrastructure, and pushing prototypes in the lab to their limits and investigating those limitations. We are interested in diverse candidates with 2+ years of relevant experience, but we will prioritize curious and driven engineers with a proven track record of strong technical problem solving, communication, and collaboration.
What You'll Do
Perform component and pack‑level validation and reliability testing, simulating realistic and accelerated dynamic and environmental conditions on structural, vibration, hydraulic, thermal, and electrical sub‑systems
Design, build, instrument, and automate equipment for battery system and component testing
Investigate test and field failures to drive product development and test improvement
Work with design engineers, reliability scientists, material scientists, quality, and service to identify failure modes and generate design validation and reliability test plans
Identify and execute experiments targeting new technologies and critical risks to benefit vehicle products
Analyze and document test results, and present those results to cross‑functional teams and leadership
Collaborate with test technicians to achieve test objectives
What You'll Bring
Degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or equivalent experience
Basic knowledge of most of the following topics, with strong understanding of statics, solid mechanics, materials science, fluids, heat transfer, measurement and instrumentation, fatigue and failure analysis, physics of failure, digital electronics, analog circuits, and data acquisition
Experience designing automation systems, mechatronic systems, mechanical structures, or machinery in 3D CAD software
Experience with an object‑oriented coding language and scripting (Python, C++, etc.) for hardware control and data analysis
Experience designing and debugging analog circuits, digital or embedded systems; experience using electrical test equipment such as digital multimeters, hipot testers, micro‑ohm meters, oscilloscopes, signal analyzers
Experience creating and executing design validation plans and test methods to validate performance requirements
Familiarity with high voltage systems
Experience leading, and driving technical projects to completion, especially when multiple teams' input and consensus are required
An appetite for hands‑on technical problem solving and first‑principles thinking
Compensation and Benefits Along with competitive pay, as a full‑time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire:
