Position Summary Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children provides compassionate care to children, teenagers, and young adults of Central Florida for more than 30 years. Located on the downtown Orlando campus, the hospital includes 156 licensed beds for specialized child care as well as the Bert Martin’s Champions for Children Emergency Department & Trauma Center, the pediatric site of the Orlando Health ORMC Level One Trauma Center. State‑of‑the‑art pediatric services are provided by a comprehensive staff that includes pediatric subspecialty physicians and a “Magnet” recognized nursing team. The hospital has earned national recognition for 12 consecutive years as a “Best Children’s Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report and was included, together with Orlando Health ORMC, in the IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® list for 2021.

Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children Medical Laboratory is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist III (Point of Care Testing) to perform and oversee POCT tests (waived and non‑waived) across multiple clinical departments, maintain and troubleshoot POCT instruments, manage quality control, coordinate proficiency testing, and train and assess competencies of non‑lab personnel. The candidate will document and review POCT results, collaborate with nursing and medical staff to optimize POCT workflow, and participate in the development, evaluation, and implementation of laboratory procedures while ensuring compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and hospital policies.

Shift Full Time - Days

Responsibilities Essential Functions

Evaluate specimens for quality and preanalytical errors.

Verify results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.

Perform, evaluate, and document all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.

Provide guidance and direction to other team members with less experience.

Work independently within broad guidelines rather than prescribed procedures.

Assist with troubleshooting problems and recommend possible solutions.

Explain difficult or sensitive information in a clear manner.

Perform high‑complexity testing.

Verify instrument performance standards, including linearity, reportable range, and method comparisons.

Demonstrate computer system proficiency, including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.

Ensure proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.

Assist with inventory management.

Communicate critical results to patient caregivers.

Provide guidance on potential sources of error or interfering substances.

Use theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills to troubleshoot unusual situations and report unresolved issues to management.

Work independently to accomplish assigned tasks.

Evaluate accuracy of results considering all testing phases and potential sources of error.

Assist in the development of departmental policies and procedures for test performance, quality control, and preventative maintenance.

Report work activities, instrument issues, supply issues, and pending work at shift change to the incoming MLS.

Respond to technical inquiries related to work.

Assist in training new team members and students.

Maintain reliable attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, ADA, FMLA, and applicable standards.

Maintain compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Other Related Functions

Perform specimen collection procedures, receiving, and processing as required.

Answer the telephone and greet guests to the department.

Maintain current job knowledge to effectively instruct students or other personnel.

Take an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program.

Follow established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.

Practice infection control and safety practices and keep a clean and organized work area.

Maintain confidentiality of patient records, hospital, and departmental matters at all times.

Qualifications Education/Training

Bachelor’s degree required.

Associate’s degree and two years of directly related experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree (in addition to the requirements listed in the Experience section).

Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.

Licensure/Certification

Maintain current Florida license as a Medical Technologist certified in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned.

National certification such as ASCP, AAB, or AMT is preferred.

Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of experience. Department‑specific competencies may be required based on the area of assignment.
