Position Summary The Medical Laboratory Scientist Sr. evaluates, assists in the interpreting of results, and analyzes blood and body fluids using both automated and complex manual methods following established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes.

This position will be in Hematology.

Schedule: Mon‑Fri, 10:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m.

Responsibilities Essential Functions

Evaluates specimens for quality and pre‑analytical errors.

Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.

Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.

Works under general guidance, typically on moderately complex procedures only.

Understands other laboratory areas and their interrelationships.

Works semi‑autonomously to accomplish assigned tasks.

Verifies instrument performance standards including linearity, reportable range, and method comparisons.

Demonstrates computer system proficiency (ordering, resulting, inquiry functions).

Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.

Assists with inventory management.

Communicates critical results to patient caregivers.

Evaluates accuracy of results across all testing phases (pre‑analytical, analytical, post‑analytical).

Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues, and pending work at shift change to oncoming MLS.

Responds to work‑related technical inquiries.

Assists in training new team members and students.

Maintains regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies and applicable laws (ADA, FMLA).

Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Other Related Functions

Performs specimen collection, receiving, and processing as required.

Answers telephone and greets department guests.

Maintains current job knowledge to effectively instruct students or other personnel.

Follows established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.

Practices infection control and safety measures; maintains a clean and organized work area.

Maintains confidentiality of patient records, hospital, and departmental matters at all times.

Qualifications Education & Training

Bachelor’s degree required.

Associate’s degree plus two years of directly related experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree (in addition to the experience requirements below).

Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.

Licensure & Certification

Current Florida license as a Medical Technologist, certified in the specialty or specialties required by the assigned laboratory section(s).

National certification such as:

American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB)

American Medical Technologists (AMT)

Experience

Minimum of one (1) year experience required. Department‑specific competencies may be required based on area of assignment.
