We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Staff Anesthesiologist to join our team. The successful candidate will provide high‑quality anesthesia care to patients undergoing surgical and non‑surgical procedures. This person will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and patient‑centered care.
Qualifications To qualify, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. All requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement—01/16/2026.
United States Citizenship
Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education
Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
Degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year of completion.
Approved schools are accredited LCME or COCA institutions for the year of degree granted.
For foreign medical graduates, verification with ECFMG is required and a copy of the ECFMG certificate must be obtained.
Licensure and Registration: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia, and current registration if required for continuing active licensure.
Residency Training
Completion of a federally approved core specialty residency program leading to board certification eligibility.
Boards: ACGME or AOA‑approved residency or equivalent determined appropriate by the local Professional Standards Board.
English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Preferred Experience/Qualifications : Board Certified or Board Eligible (see VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G‑2).
Duties
This position is located in the Surgical Care Service Line at the Fort Wayne campus.

Responsibilities:
Board‑certified anesthesiologist, fully capable of functioning independently in an operating room and on call.
Traditional OR‑based position for an energetic and well‑trained clinician.
Perioperative anesthetic care to patients encompassing all ASA physical statuses.
Preoperative assessments—including early consultations.
Intraoperative direct patient care, PACU care, and appropriate post‑op ward care when needed.
Providing anesthetic care for general surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, podiatry, and women’s health (gynecology).
Regional outpatient anesthesia skills required (fellowship not required).
Provide non‑OR anesthesia in gastroenterology (endoscopy – ERCP), pulmonology (bronchoscopy), cardiology (cardioversion), and mental health (ECT).
Occasional acute pain management (e.g., epidural blood patches, PCA consultations; fellowship training not required).
Provide expert support for out‑of‑OR airway management (OORAM) emergencies at the NIHCS.
Participate in ongoing program improvement for planning, objectives, policies, and standards for quality anesthetic care as requested by NIHCS leadership.
Hours: Monday–Friday 0800‑430 pm based on a 20‑hour work week schedule.
Recruitment Incentive: Sign‑on Bonus; Authorized Paid Time Off: Annual leave; Part‑time workers earn 1 hour for every 10 hours worked (max 240 hours carried over); Sick leave: 1 hour for every 20 hours worked.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution; Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care (many federal programs transferable to retirement).
Licensure: One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory.
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement.

Contract: No physician employment contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
