As an Awake Overnight, your main responsibility is to remain awake and alert at all times during your shift. You will make routine checks of all students as specified in the schedule for the residence. You will attend to the direct care, medical and behavioral needs of students in the residence. The schedule will be set each week and Saturday 11 p.m.- 7 a.m. is a required shift.
Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Expectations Include The Following:
Student Safety, Supervision & Emergency Response
- Maintain continuous alertness and remain awake throughout the entire shift.
- Conduct routine student checks according to the residence schedule.
- Ensure a safe, secure residential environment and respond effectively to emergencies.
- Identify, report, and respond appropriately to safety hazards in accordance with OSHA and Perkins Hazard Communication standards.
- Accurately report student incidents, injuries, and staff injuries following established policies and procedures.
- Assist with lifting, transferring, and physically supporting students as needed to ensure safety and care.
Direct Student Care & Support
- Provide consistent overnight supervision and direct care tailored to each student's individual needs and performance levels.
- Monitor and respond to student medical and behavioral needs, following care plans and established procedures.
- Adjust support strategies as needed to ensure student well-being, comfort, and stability overnight.
- Promote student independence, self-confidence, and the development of social, organizational, and daily living skills when appropriate.
Observation, Documentation & Information Sharing
- Accurately complete staff and student logs to document overnight observations and significant events.
- Communicate critical student health, safety, or behavioral information clearly and promptly to the coordinator and incoming staff.
- Use documentation systems effectively to support continuity of care and informed decision-making.
Professional Communication & Team Collaboration
- Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with supervisors and residential team members.
- Share relevant information in a timely, clear, and professional manner.
- Make sound independent decisions while contributing positively to team-based decisions.
- Participate actively as a reliable, supportive, and accountable member of the residential team.
Respectful, Inclusive & Student-Centered Practice
- Foster positive, respectful, and inclusive relationships with students, colleagues, administrators, and families.
- Demonstrate professionalism, patience, and consistency in all interactions.
- Support a residential culture that prioritizes student dignity, safety, and well-being.
Environment & Routine Management
- Maintain a clean, neat, and welcoming residential environment that supports learning and rest.
- Follow established routines and expectations that promote overnight safety and consistency.
- Complete additional assigned duties that support residential operations and student care.
Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma, higher education degree preferred
- 1+ years experience working with special needs children or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Ability to complete and maintain First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED); Crisis Prevention and Physical Intervention (Safetycare) required;
- Sign Language (dependent on program needs);
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
The following shared salary range is what Perkins reasonably expects, in good faith, to pay for the position. The applicable range could differ based on experience and qualification.
$17.68-$28.18
