Overview The registered Respiratory Therapist possesses sufficient training and experience to perform independent professional respiratory care diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, clinical evaluation of care including the establishment of therapeutic objectives and the review of care. The final and ultimate authority, judgment and clinical decision making are the responsibility of a physician. He/she is involved in acute critical and/or life‑threatening patient care areas and situations.

Qualifications Minimum education

Preferred: Associate’s Degree; Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree.

Required skills/knowledge

Demonstration of proficient ventilator management; clinical evaluation skills; strong communication; ability to handle stressful situations; good time management; active AARC membership (state affiliation preferred); participation in professional growth activities (preferred).

Required licenses and certifications

Must meet DC licensure requirements; Registered (R.R.T.) by the NBRC; BLS; PALS. NPS, ACLS, NRP (preferred).

Job Functions

Operate mechanical ventilators, airway management (suctioning, tracheostomy care and change) and administer medical gas therapy as needed.

Administer inhaled medications; bronchopulmonary hygiene/drainage; assist with breathing exercises; monitor physiological responses such as vital signs, adverse reactions and capillary/arterial blood gases.

Evaluate effects of respiratory therapy treatments by observing, noting, and evaluating patient progress; recommend adjustments and modifications.

Educate patients and families about conditions and teach disease‑management techniques, breathing exercises, medication use and respiratory equipment.

Transport mechanically ventilated patients internally and externally.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge through continuing education workshops.

Document patient care services in MedHost EHR.

Inspect, clean, test and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure safe and efficient functioning.

Job Details Organization: HSC Pediatric Center; Position status: R Regular PT – Part‑Time; Shift: Night (7 pm – 7:30 am).
