Verrus

About Verrus Data centers should be valuable assets to their customers, the grid, and the local community such that we are able to give customers what they want, where they want it, while cities and utilities are actively seeking us to build in their region.

Verrus is a developer of next‑generation, greenfield hyperscale data centers that flexibly leverage its onsite energy infrastructure (i.e. large scale BESS) through our proprietary technology. This allows Verrus to be a flexible resource to the grid, and provide grid services that facilitate interconnection and the effective procurement of power and carbon‑free energy, and balance traditional and variable uptime workloads (e.g., AI/ML). Verrus builds and capitalizes its turnkey data centers deeply integrated with energy resources, providing significant advantages over traditional designs.

Verrus is led by industry veterans with experience at the largest data center development companies as well as power & utilities, delivering GWs of data center capacity across four continents in their careers (representing billions of investment).

About Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners Verrus is backed by Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners. With investment from Alphabet, Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, and Stepstone Group, SIP is a consolidated holding company that builds innovative technology‑enabled infrastructure companies and projects that deliver positive social and environmental impact at scale. SIP believes that technology‑enabled infrastructure will help to solve some of the world’s most pressing social and environmental challenges.

Following years of research and in collaboration with the Verrus management team, SIP formed Verrus to design, build, and operate the world’s most innovative data centers, leveraging unique technology to develop a scaled project portfolio that delivers significant financial, environmental, and innovation outcomes.

Role Verrus is seeking a Head of Energy Policy to lead our regulatory strategy and advocacy efforts, reporting directly to the Head of Energy. In this role, you will architect and execute the policy framework required to monetize and scale Verrus’ flexible data center technology.

While our Energy Program Managers execute on‑the‑ground interconnection and utility engagement for specific sites within existing rules, your mandate is to modernize those rules. You will focus on structural market reforms that unlock the value of flexibility, championing regulatory changes at the federal (FERC/ISO/RTO) and state (PUC/PSC/Legislative) levels. Your goal is to create an environment where grid‑responsive assets are rewarded for reliability, where interconnection is accelerated for flexible loads, and where new tariff structures incentivize next‑generation infrastructure.

You are a strategic operator who understands the nuance of energy market design and can translate technical grid capabilities into compelling policy arguments. You will work in close collaboration with the energy and site acquisition operating team to ensure our development pipeline informs our policy priorities, and that our sites are positioned to capitalize on upcoming regulatory shifts.

Responsibilities

Federal & RTO/ISO Advocacy: Lead direct engagement with FERC and key Independent System Operators (e.g., PJM, MISO, CAISO, ERCOT, SPP) to influence market rules regarding interconnection queue reform, resource adequacy accreditation, and hybrid resource participation.

State‑Level Regulatory Engagement: Direct advocacy efforts at State Public Utility Commissions and energy offices in our target regions to shape rate designs, economic development incentives, and Integrated Resource Plans (IRPs) to support large‑scale, grid‑aware industrial loads.

Market Design & Reform: Define and drive Verrus’ legislative and regulatory agenda, with a primary focus on creating market mechanisms (Capacity, Ancillary Services, Energy) that properly value flexible load, demand response, and co‑located storage assets.

Strategic Collaboration: Partner closely with the Head of Energy and Energy Program Managers to translate policy wins into actionable commercial advantages (e.g., creating a pathway for faster interconnection in constrained markets).

Coalition Leadership: Build and lead coalitions with peer technology companies, energy trade groups, and consumer advocates to advance shared policy goals regarding grid reliability, transmission expansion, and energy affordability.

Thought Leadership: Represent Verrus in industry forums, regulatory hearings, and expert panels, articulating the vision of data centers as dynamic "grid assets" rather than passive loads.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Law, Economics, Engineering, or a related field.

12+ years of experience in energy policy, regulatory affairs, or government relations, with a specific focus on electricity markets and grid infrastructure.

Deep expertise in US power markets (RTO/ISO rules), FERC processes, and utility rate‑making.

Proven track record of influencing regulatory outcomes or legislative text to benefit complex infrastructure, renewable energy, or storage assets.

Experience interacting with C‑suite executives and translating complex regulatory dynamics into business strategy.

Strong existing relationships with key regulators, energy policymakers, and industry stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Master’s degree in Public Policy or an energy related field of study.

Experience specifically advocating for "flexible load," demand response, virtual power plants (VPPs), or battery storage policy.

Prior experience as a state/federal utility regulator and/or in a policy leadership role at a major energy developer, utility, or large technology power buyer (Hyperscaler).

Compensation The annual base salary range for this position is $160,000-$250,000. Salary is only one part of Verrus’ comprehensive compensation package, which also includes a discretionary bonus, equity, general health benefits and paid time off. Compensation is determined by multiple factors, including market location, and may vary based on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience.
