Position Summary The City of Greensboro is seeking a Police Chief to serve as the community’s principal public safety leader. The Chief will lead a 651 sworn officer and 126 professional staff team, managing a $109 million budget, and oversee all departmental functions.

Key Responsibilities

Provide strategic leadership and set a clear direction for the department.

Ensure day-to-day operational performance while emphasizing transparency, fairness, and community partnership.

Drive innovation, strengthen technology and systems, and raise training and professional development standards.

Promote officer wellness and create a culture of accountability and integrity.

Collaborate with residents, community organizations, service providers, and regional partners to reduce crime and address homelessness, substance use, and mental‑health needs.

Maintain resident trust, reduce racial disparities, and engage visibly in the community.

Key Position Priorities

Reduce violent and property crime and improve traffic safety.

Rebuild trust and advance equity by reducing racial disparities and improving transparency.

Strengthen responses to homelessness, mental health, and substance‑abuse issues.

Align staffing and deployment with Greensboro’s growth.

Improve internal culture and leadership, supporting officer wellbeing and stabilizing staffing.

Qualifications

Minimum 10 years progressive law‑enforcement experience, 5–7 years in positions of administrative and command responsibility at rank of Captain or higher.

BA/BS degree (master’s preferred); required executive law‑enforcement training such as FBI National Academy, SMIB, etc.

In‑state certification transfer allowed with less than 12‑month break; out‑of‑state certification requires a state‑accredited basic training course with less than 3‑year break.

Strong leadership qualities: transparency, integrity, courage, compassion, empathy, communication, strategy, innovation, financial acumen, equity focus, resilience, and political acumen.

Compensation and Benefits Salary: $172,210–$275,684 annually, depending on qualifications and experience. A highly competitive benefits package is offered.
