CDU offers the only historically black Doctor of Medicine program west of the Mississippi and is invested in the local and regional community, leading partnerships to provide equitable healthcare resources in south Los Angeles neighborhoods.

Job Description

The CAP Fellowship Program Director (PD) is responsible for the overall program administration and operations, including teaching and scholarly activity, fellow recruitment and selection, supervision, evaluation and promotion of fellows, and disciplinary actions with due process. The PD maintains the program’s vision, accreditation compliance, and high standards for fellows’ training. The PD models outstanding professionalism, a scholarly approach to work, high-quality patient care, and educational excellence. The PD is accountable to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), the designated institutional official (DIO), and the ACGME Review Committee (RC) for timely and accurate completion of all tasks. This position requires strong leadership, communication, problem solving, interpersonal skills and a passion for improving the lives of children.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Administration

Maintaining accreditation compliance

Curriculum development and implementation, including addressing social drivers of health in served populations

Recruitment and selection – application review, interview and match rank list

Evaluation and promotion of fellows

Resource management – secure educational, clinical and financial resources for program operations

Policy implementation – adherence to GME and departmental policies on duty hour, patient load and trainee wellbeing

Clinical educational leadership to maintain a learning environment across ACGME competencies

Supervise and teach trainees (fellows, residents and medical students)

Scholarly Activity – participate in research, publications and presentations; mentor fellows in scholarly projects

Faculty development – recruit, mentor and support faculty development

Advocacy – promote leadership in improving the lives of children and their families

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Participation in institutional governance of GME programs and compliance with CDU policies and procedures

Maintain knowledge of ACGME institutional, program requirements and CLER expectations

GMEC participation, committee work, and program representation

Coordinate requests for information from GMEC, Office of GME, or ACGME and ensure timely responses

Ensure compliance with periodic surveys and program reviews

Annual Program Evaluation, Special Reviews and Internal Reviews

Conduct an Annual Program Evaluation (APE) and record findings in the designated system

Prepare internal or special review materials as required by GMEC protocols

Develop action plans for areas of non-compliance and provide periodic updates to GMEC

ACGME RC-related Responsibilities

Maintain knowledge of and compliance with ACGME policies and program requirements

Respond to RC requests and provide required information

Ensure DIO reviews and co-signs relevant correspondence to ACGME

Develop action plans for RC findings and provide updates to GMEC

Ensure annual WebAds updates and oversee Self-Study processes

Ensure accurate resident case log reporting and quality of education across sites

Prepare Program Letters of Agreement with clinical sites and revise every ten years

Recruitment and Selection

Recruit fellows of the highest caliber

Conduct fair, holistic interviews and select applicants

Promote diverse and inclusive recruitment and retention practices

Provide applicant credentials to affiliated hospitals for timely approval

Educational Components of the Program

Ensure alignment with community needs, institutional mission, and program aims

Collaborate with leadership to maintain a positive learning climate

Develop and oversee an educational curriculum per ACGME requirements

Prepare competency-based goals and objectives for fellows

Ensure fellows receive training in: disclosure of adverse events, Social Determinants of Health, and core ethical principles

Evaluation of Fellows, Faculty and Program

Implement a competency-based assessment system with regular feedback

Assess fellow performance across ACGME general competencies

Report milestones to ACGME; provide final evaluation upon program completion

Assess faculty performance and provide faculty development opportunities

Evaluate candidates for program faculty participation and maintain annual reviews

Link educational outcomes to program improvement through an annual quality improvement process

Supervision and Patient Safety

Ensure sufficient qualified supervisors at all sites

Provide appropriate supervision to enable safe patient care and progressive responsibility

Publish written supervision policies; educate supervisors on standards

Monitor compliance with supervision standards and transitions of care

Educate fellows and faculty on reporting patient safety events and near misses

Fellow Well Being

Ensure compliance with work hour requirements

Schedule clinical and didactic activities with attention to wellbeing

Emphasize education across ACGME competencies

Monitor fellow stress and well-being concerns; advocate for fellows

Provide confidential feedback channels and regular formative feedback

Education

Earned Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Psychology with emphasis in clinical/community psychology from a regionally accredited program

Licenses/Certifications

Board certified in psychology and board certified in Adult and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; licensed in California

Current Driver’s License

Work Experience

Five (5) years or more of full-time higher education experience; prior leadership experience preferred

Record of scholarship aligned with psychology discipline and commensurate to rank

Skills

Knowledge of educational program administration and curriculum development

Knowledge of teaching and practice in psychology; awareness of healthcare industry trends

Recruitment, strategic planning, and commitment to underserved communities

Demonstrated leadership in teaching, research, and public service

Complexity The role requires highly detailed work with sustained attention across numerous inquiries.
