Clinical Responsibilities

Provides day‑to‑day organizational and clinical direction for the healthcare provider team in collaboration with attending physicians. Performs comprehensive history and physical assessment for patients admitted to the emergency department. Orders, obtains, and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests and establishes medical diagnosis. Designs, orders, and documents treatment plans, including prescriptions, based on a comprehensive review of history and diagnostic results. Initiates protocols and evaluates plans of care to ensure timely intervention and appropriate patient flow. Performs invasive procedures and collaborates with attendings and residents regarding admission, discharge, and transfer decisions. Presents patients on rounds and communicates plans of care with the collaborative physician, primary care provider, nursing staff, and case manager. Communicates care plans with patients and family members and provides education related to treatment and medication regimens. Offers counseling and education regarding disease process, health maintenance, and preventive care services. Initiates appropriate referrals and specialty consultations as needed and facilitates patient flow in collaboration with case management. Provides specialty consultation and advocates for patient rights and participation in care decisions.

Education Responsibilities

Provides formal and informal educational programs for team members consistent with evidence‑based practice standards. Participates in mentoring activities and precepts students. Promotes understanding of disease processes in area of specialty/program. Functions as a clinical resource for interns, residents, fellows, nurses, and medical students. Provides community education, health promotion, and outreach.

Clinical Leadership and Outcomes

Coordinates adequate nurse practitioner coverage and works with physicians to achieve service‑specific outcome targets including clinical outcomes, length of stay, cost of care, and patient satisfaction. Participates in performance improvement activities aimed at improving clinical outcomes and minimizing variation. Develops clinical pathways in collaboration with physician leadership and the multidisciplinary team. Leads quality assurance activities and establishes standard of practice. Advances patient care delivery through evidence‑based practice and industry best practices. Advises hospital‑level policy and procedure to improve delivery of care.

Customer Service

Models a customer service focus for all internal and external customers. Demonstrates respect for all people in the work environment.

Professional Development and Leadership

Serves on department, hospital, and community committees. Maintains professional licensure, certification, and collaborative agreement as required by the Maryland State Board of Nursing and national certifying organizations. Participates in educational opportunities such as journal clubs and grand rounds. Pursues educational opportunities for professional growth (e.g., CEUs, update conferences).

Research Responsibilities

Serves as a clinical trial sub investigator and coordinates industry-sponsored research. Doctorally prepared nurse practitioners conduct nursing research as principal investigators.
