About The Role The Senior Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for providing technical support to Production, assisting customers with DFM, launching new products into production, and identifying and implementing process improvements within the Wheeling, IL facility. The role focuses on medical device manufacturing (primarily robotic surgery) and desires experience in an ISO13485 facility. Key manufacturing processes include Swiss screw, high‑speed 5‑axis machining, vertical milling, assembly, packaging, passivation, and cleaning.
Responsibilities
Support Production with machine setups, troubleshooting, operator training, and related functions.
Identify, implement, and document process improvements (cycle time, tool life, process capability, automation).
Select, qualify, and launch new equipment in the factory.
Assist Engineering with part updates, machine layouts, and programs.
Collaborate with customers to modify specifications to improve cost, quality, and lead time.
Communicate design changes and updates to internal teams.
Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, working with manufacturing teams to implement corrective actions.
Work with the quoting team to assign accurate costs to new parts based on materials, labor, and complexity.
Generate prints, tool layouts, and programs for new parts; develop detailed routing steps for production.
Monitor and measure new part performance, collecting data on quality, efficiency, and output.
Train manufacturing functions on new part setup, operation, and quality control procedures; maintain training materials.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
7+ years of mechanical experience in a manufacturing environment.
Ability to read and understand part prints.
Experience designing processes and operating/setup of CNC machines (Swiss, vertical milling, 5‑axis).
Proficiency in CAD software; SolidWorks expertise is a plus.
Experience with CAD/CAM software.
Strong problem‑solving and continuous‑improvement attitude.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field desired; engineering experience may substitute for a degree.
