Enterprise Architect - Network Architect
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Information Technology Division (ITD) is seeking an Enterprise Architect within the Enterprise Architecture team. The role will focus on strategic planning, design, and long‑term vision for network solutions that align with organizational goals. All computer networks will be configured to provide secure, efficient access to applications, data, and tools while meeting rigorous security standards and installing and configuring hardware elements. Documentation will be required throughout the design and deployment process for future reference and maintenance.

Responsibilities
Document comprehensive network designs that integrate multiple network technologies, such as LANs, WANs, wireless networks, and VPNs, to support the organization’s business operations and communication needs.
Design cloud‑centric networks, including multi‑tenant, multi‑region (intra‑US) deployments and multi‑vendor technologies across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS tiers.
Design data‑centric networks for efficient data transfers within the agency and across agencies and with external business partners.
Integrate network solutioning with the emerging Cloud FinOps practice to support cost analysis and modeling for networking‑related costs.
Design and document the entire network implementation process.
Monitor network performance and take follow‑up steps to resolve latency issues and security concerns.
Create documentation throughout the design and deployment process for future reference.
Develop patterns and standards for all network designs.
Analyze data traffic and system performance to determine future upgrades.
Work with IT staff and third‑party equipment and software vendors to ensure network needs are met.
Research new technologies and solutions, and assess new technologies for adoption.
Define multisite network operations and software applications.
Train, mentor, and transfer skills to the extended team.
Work on highly complex projects that require in‑depth knowledge across multiple specialized architecture domains and networking layers.
Align architecture strategy with business goals.
Define, explain, and advocate technology strategy.
Required Skills
Experience in technical design and architecture around network equipment and network software systems.
Experience designing, building, and maintaining multi‑tier networks.
Experience handling issues in large networks, prioritizing network security and compliance, and understanding security protocols, firewalls, etc.
Advanced network design and architecture planning, proficiency in network simulation and modeling tools, network security frameworks and best practices.
Conduct site assessments of current remote site WAN/LAN/WLAN environments, identify network problem areas, and develop hierarchical network designs.
Experience with project data and documentation tools, and creating network design documentation and presentations using Visio.
Designed and implemented multiple global Azure cloud solutions to support revenue generation; experienced in migrating key servers to cloud‑based services.
Knowledge of network security frameworks and best practices, cloud networking and virtualization technologies, Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure and protocols.
