The Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama is currently recruiting candidates for the position of
Chair of the Department of Pediatrics
at the level of Professor. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to lead a dynamic academic department with a wide range of clinical, educational, and research programs dedicated to advancing child health in our region.
The Chair will provide strategic leadership and oversight for all aspects of the Department of Pediatrics, including the coordination of hospital call and inpatient coverage to ensure the delivery of comprehensive and continuous pediatric care. Given the significant scope of the pediatric ambulatory enterprise, the Chair will also hold responsibility for both primary care and subspecialty ambulatory services, ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and access. In addition, the Chair will guide the department’s efforts to advance care for children with medical complexity, reflecting the department’s essential role within an academic health center.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to advance the department’s clinical, educational, and research missions; foster interdisciplinary collaboration; and strengthen partnerships within the health system and broader community.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership across all departmental missions, including clinical care, medical education, research, and community engagement.
Partner with the Dean and health system leadership to set and implement strategic priorities that align with the mission and goals of the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine and USA Health.
Manage clinical subspecialties with the explicit goals of improving patient-centered care, enhancing value, and expanding access. Develop new services as appropriate to achieve organizational goals.
Oversee both primary care and subspecialty ambulatory services, ensuring effective integration across the continuum of pediatric care.
Recruit, retain, and mentor faculty, medical students, residents, and fellows; foster an environment that supports academic productivity, professional development, and physician well‑being.
Advance scholarly activity and curriculum innovation within the department.
Provide leadership to enhance patient-centered care, quality, safety, and patient experience in both outpatient and inpatient services.
Qualifications
MD, DO, or equivalent; board certification in Pediatrics.
Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Alabama.
