Mondeadditif
Additive Manufacturing Engineer – Directed Energy Deposition
Mondeadditif, Baltimore, Maryland, United States, 21276
Do you have a passion for additive manufacturing?
Do you have experience using Directed Energy Deposition systems?
Do you love to push the bounds of science and technology while working to take on some of the most challenging problems facing our Nation?
If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our team and serve as an Additive Manufacturing Engineer – Directed Energy Deposition and help lead the development of this capability at APL.
You will be a vital member of APL’s Additive Manufacturing Center (AMC), within the Research and Exploratory Development Department. The Additive Manufacturing Center is tasked with leading the implementation of innovative AM materials and processes to meet the future needs of APL staff and our Government sponsors. The AMC also supports APL with specialized prototyping and low-volume production services. As a member of our team, you’ll build hardware that explores other planets and interstellar space through various NASA missions as well as building critical prototype hardware for our nation’s national security and national health interests. In addition, we provide manufacturing expertise as part of our trusted agent role for the US government.
Responsibilities
Apply AM expertise to continually grow and improve our technical capabilities in support of research, development, and production tasks. Perform manufacturing tasks supporting research and fabrication using Directed Energy Deposition (DED) equipment, including wire‑fed and powder‑blown machines. Modify part designs for DED fabrication using parametric CAD software such as SolidWorks or Creo. Coordinate equipment operation, organize projects and connect with customers regarding schedule, outcomes, and ideas for improvement. Evaluate new metal AM machines and provide input on new machine selection for purchase. Develop training materials and train junior technicians and engineers on the AM process steps. Participate in educating APL staff about the capabilities and limitations of metal Additive Manufacturing at the AMC. Standardize procedures including the handling of digital data / design files, and process data acquired during a job, ensuring consistent machine setup and cleaning to minimize cross‑contamination between materials. Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements. Implement Quality Control procedures in a research, prototyping, and low volume production environment. Qualifications – Minimum
Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field or equivalent work experience. Have 1+ years of experience operating powder‑blown or wire‑fed DED machines. Have strong troubleshooting skills in the context of process development and optimization for additive manufacturing. Have experience with computer‑aided design software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CREO, and similar. Have proficiency in reading and understanding technical drawings (GD&T), schematics, and manuals. Have working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Have excellent verbal communication skills with other technicians, engineers, and scientists. Are energized by working in a fast‑paced, creative environment, with a mix of cutting‑edge R&D projects, and qualified manufacturing jobs. Are a self‑starter, able to work independently with minimal direction. Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship. Qualifications – Preferred
Hold a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field. 5+ Years of metal additive manufacturing experience. Experience with multiple types of metal additive manufacturing machines (selective laser melting or directed energy deposition) in a research or industrial setting. Experience programming and operating 5‑axis CNC machines. CAM/Slicing software experience (Example: Materialise Magics, AddUp Manager, MasterCAM). Working knowledge of metals and machining practices in relation to Additive Manufacturing. Solid understanding in laser material processing; fiber laser a plus. Experience with heat treatments and the effect on material properties and microstructure in relation to metal Additive Manufacturing. Experience with health and safety practices in an industrial laboratory environment with chemical, mechanical, and laser hazards. Why work at APL?
