Base Pay Range
$135,000.00/yr - $150,000.00/yr
Overview AARP is the nation’s largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering people 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. With a nationwide presence, AARP strengthens communities and advocates for what matters most to the 125 million Americans 50-plus and their families—health and financial security, and personal fulfillment. AARP also produces the nation’s largest‑circulation publications AARP The Magazine and AARP Bulletin. The Office of Chief of Staff keeps AARP operating and informed on a day‑to‑day basis. The staff works closely with the CEO and other E‑Team members to provide leadership and direction to make strategic decisions. The Public Relations Director leads enterprise strategy for managing, advancing, and protecting organization reputation and brand. Leads the development of advocacy and consumer‑related public relations programs, strategies, and tactics to build relationships with key community thought leaders and policymakers to advance organization initiatives. This position works closely with leadership and across teams to create and implement unified content.
Responsibilities
Develops and maintains enterprise strategy for managing, advancing, and protecting the organization’s reputation and brand.
Sets strategy and implements advocacy and consumer‑related media relations efforts and campaigns.
Develops and maintains strong relationships with key external stakeholders, influencers and partners, to enhance the organization’s reputation, positioning, engagement, and reach.
Writes press materials, media advisories, talking points and press releases that are often complex, nuanced, technical, or sensitive in nature.
Provides complex project management, including work with vendors.
Provides senior‑level counsel and support to executives and leadership in all media interactions.
Plans and implements public relations tactics to improve AARP’s brand recognition and positive public image.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
8+ years of progressive experience in Public Relations, with a focus on consumer and/or advocacy Public Relations.
Demonstrated success in developing and executing high‑impact campaigns.
Proven ability to lead teams and manage complex projects with strong organizational and decision‑making skills.
Established relationships with national media outlets and influencers.
Documented history of delivering measurable results through innovative Public Relations initiatives.

Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships.
Independent judgment in evaluation options to make sound decisions.
In‑office/open‑office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.

Hybrid Work Environment AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.
