Direct Support Professional - Cypress Hills
Join YAI as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at our residential location in Brooklyn (Cypress Hills, East New York). The role supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to live, love, work, and learn in their communities.
About the Position DSPs provide direct care, including counseling, training in ADLs, personal care, medical, dietary, social, sexual, recreational, financial, habilitative and other needs. They work in homes, YAI residences, day habilitation centers, or the community.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver direct care services and support in ADLs, personal care, and other needs.
Ensure health, safety, and wellness of the people we support.
Provide intimate care functions as required.
Build and maintain positive relationships.
Participate in development and implementation of treatment plans.
Respond to crises and provide intervention/management.
Complete mandatory training (AMAP, CPR/First Aid, SCIP‑R, Defensive Driving, etc.) and demonstrate OPWDD core competencies.
Support individuals in maximizing strengths, interests, and abilities through teaching, self‑advocacy, and emotional support.
Facilitate community integration, recreational activities, and socialization.
Maintain documentation for compliance and billing.
Train or present to team members.
Perform additional job related tasks as needed.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
Valid NYS Driver’s License required for most positions.
Work or life experience in the I/DD field is a plus; not mandatory for DSP 1 positions.
For DSP 2 positions, at least 2 years’ experience in the I/DD field.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Basic computer knowledge.
TB test and background check mandatory.
Schedule
Full‑time (40 hrs/week) or Part‑time (8–32 hrs/week).
Weekday and/or weekend positions available.
Shift options: Morning (7 a–3 p), Evening (3 p–11 p), Overnight (11 p–7 a).
