Role Summary The
Book Boss
serves as the operational, editorial, and coordination lead for large-scale, multi-agency federal documentation efforts. This role functions as the
document owner and process manager
for multiple interrelated reports and deliverables, ensuring accuracy, consistency, quality, and on-time delivery across a highly distributed federal environment.
This position is
not a technical lead role . Technical direction and subject-matter decisions remain with designated leads and SMEs. The Book Boss is responsible for driving execution—hands-on editing, integration of agency inputs, version control, schedule enforcement, and end-to-end document production.
Key Roles & Responsibilities Document Ownership & Editorial Leadership
Serve as the document owner for multiple interdependent federal reports and deliverables
Perform extensive hands‑on editing for grammar, clarity, structure, formatting, and consistency
Integrate inputs from numerous federal agencies and stakeholder organizations
Track, reconcile, and incorporate all comments and revisions, including minor edits
Maintain strict version control, redlines, comparison history, and document integrity
Stakeholder & Working Group Coordination
Support multiple working‑level and technical leads with editing, feedback integration, and formatting
Coordinate directly with designated leads to resolve comment threads and ensure alignment
Support effort‑estimation and reporting inputs by tracking stakeholder feedback and revisions
Ensure consistency and cohesion across appendices, summaries, and consolidated reports
Review Cycle & Comment Management
Manage formal interagency review cycles and comment periods
Track submissions, identify gaps, and follow up with non‑responsive stakeholders
Escalate risks to schedule or completeness to program leadership
Validate that all comments are properly addressed and documented
Final Report Production
Integrate working‑level content into consolidated reports
Support decisions regarding content progression across draft, interim, and final deliverables
Own final editing, formatting, and assembly of submission‑ready documents
Schedule & Delivery Management
Own and track milestone dates across multiple concurrent deliverables
Drive deadline adherence through reminders, coordination, and escalation
Manage high‑volume editing and rapid turnaround cycles near submission deadlines

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Public Policy, Technical Writing, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
8+ years of experience managing complex, multi‑author federal documentation efforts
Demonstrated experience coordinating inputs across multiple agencies or large stakeholder groups
Advanced proficiency in document version control, comment tracking, and editorial quality assurance
Exceptional written communication and editing skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting federal interagency programs or working groups
Familiarity with structured federal review and approval processes
Experience managing high‑visibility deliverables under compressed timelines
Skills & Competencies Documentation & Editorial Excellence
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and document comparison tools
Exceptional attention to detail and document consistency

Strong organizational and deadline‑management skills
Ability to drive accountability without formal authority
