Seattle Children's
Overview
A fully supported Scientist IV position is available in the cross-disciplinary Coler Lab (Coler Lab - Center for Global Infectious Disease Research) to characterize immune response of novel vaccines and immune pathology associated with tuberculosis and co-morbidities, as well as how the microbiome and associated ecological and evolutionary factors affect our immune response. Previous experience in cellular immunology is required. Additionally, we seek candidates with experience in bioinformatics and/or computational approaches to analyzing vaccine induced immune responses and the microbiome. This Scientist will ask fundamental biological questions about host-pathogen interactions in the lung mucosa and will study correlates of protection and risk. Responsibilities
Responsible to plan, design and execute research development activities in support of funded research projects. Design approaches or hypotheses to be tested and methodology to be used; design specific phases of research projects. Perform experimental procedures and make detailed observations; analyze and interpret data. Application of computational methods to complex biological systems; development of computational infrastructure for processing and analysis of next‑generation sequencing datasets, including isolate and metagenomic studies; extraction of nucleic acid from various biological sources and preparation of next‑generation sequencing libraries; normalization, integration, and analysis of datasets of multiple modalities. Works closely with principal investigator on the development of technical proposals, presentations, manuscripts and grants. Plans and conducts work requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation/modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Maintain accurate documentation; ensure protocols are available to research team members. Uses a wide application of complex principles, theories and concepts in specific scientific discipline. Able to guide technical staff and provide training in protocols and laboratory techniques in BSL2 and BSL3 settings. Writes original reports incorporating data analysis and able to meet specifically agreed upon deadlines. Contribute proportional intellectual content to team efforts. Qualifications
Required Education and Experience PhD or M.D. in Molecular or Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, or other closely related field. Minimum of four (4) years experience in the required field of specialization. Prior experience with laboratory management or other relevant research field. Preferred Experience and technical skills in next-generation sequencing, multi-omics approaches, deep understanding of immunology and/or human biomarker research
Demonstrated coding skills in one or more programming languages (i.e., Python, R, shell scripting, or similar)
Proficiency in MS Office, scientific data/graphics programs, bioinformatics, and biostatistics
A strong track record of publication
Experience working under Biosafety Level 2 or 3 (BL2/BL3) conditions
Willingness and ability to work under BL3 conditions with appropriate training
Experience working with small animal models of infectious diseases
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Must be self‑motivated, highly organized and be able to work on teams
Compensation
$107,431.00 - $161,147.00 per year Benefits
