Spacer Robotics
Staff Hardware Robotics Engineer
Spacer Robotics is building autonomous, non‑humanoid robotic systems to construct infrastructure in extreme environments—from lunar bases to next‑gen terrestrial job sites. Our vision is to disrupt the $16 trillion global construction industry by pioneering a new Deep Tech philosophy that blends robotics, AI, and systems engineering at the frontier.
About the Role We’re seeking a Staff Robotics Engineer to join the core team building Spacer’s first prototype to a production level robot. This role is highly hands‑on and multidisciplinary, working at the intersection of hardware, controls, and autonomy. You’ll be responsible for designing, integrating, and testing robotic subsystems to bring our early concepts into reality. As an early hire, you’ll play a critical role in proving technical feasibility and shaping our engineering culture and leading the engineering team.
Responsibilities
Design and integrate robotic subsystems including actuators, sensors, and embedded controllers.
Develop and test prototypes, from CAD and simulation to hands‑on assembly and field validation.
Deep understanding of how to design and manufacture a chassis‑system and drivetrain, and interconnect with autonomy hardware and task‑specific mechanisms.
Implement motion planning, kinematics, and control algorithms for core robot functions.
Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and software engineers on cross‑disciplinary integration.
Build tools for testing, data collection, and performance evaluation.
Rapidly iterate on prototypes to improve reliability, durability, and usability.
Document designs, experiments, and lessons learned to accelerate future development.
Qualifications
6+ years of experience in robotics engineering, mechatronics, or related fields.
Strong programming ability in C, C++ and Python.
Hands‑on experience with real‑time systems.
Hands‑on experience with sensors, actuators, and embedded hardware.
Solid understanding of kinematics, dynamics, and control systems.
Proficiency with CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar) and rapid prototyping.
Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, iterative prototyping environment.
Hands‑on with ROS/ROS2, Gazebo, or other robotics middleware/simulation tools.
Able to explain complex concepts to junior engineers and lead them.
Preferred Qualifications
Past experience working for Tesla or SpaceX.
Background in autonomous systems, automotive, drones, space tech or mobile robotics.
Experience with perception systems (cameras, LiDAR, depth sensors) and sensor fusion.
Knowledge of system integration and debugging in complex robotic platforms.
Proven track record of physical robot development and production.
Passion for building at the frontier of robotics and infrastructure.
Compensation US base salary range: $100,000 – $225,000 annually, with additional benefits and compensation components commensurate with experience.
