Overview The Deputy Director, Visual Arts Division is a senior management position responsible for developing and implementing the division’s strategic vision and leading a comprehensive visual arts program consisting of Exhibitions, Public Art, and Arts Education. The role directs staff, manages programs, secures funding, and represents the City in external partnerships.

Essential Duties

Establish objectives, benchmarks, policies, and divisional goals aligned with DCASE mission.

Develop work standards, prioritize workload, and oversee implementation of new or modified processes.

Direct, coordinate, and manage the Annual Budget and work with Finance and Administration for contracts and fundraising.

Manage Exhibitions program, secure funding, develop exhibition concepts, and oversee exhibitions at Chicago Cultural Center, City Galleries, and traveling exhibitions.

Oversee Public Art program, maintain the city’s Public Art Collection, coordinate public programs, and manage neighborhood public art projects.

Lead Arts Education initiatives, including program planning, staff training, and community outreach.

Supervise, evaluate, and provide professional development for unit directors and staff.

Develop policies, procedures, and reports to improve operational efficiency and compliance with local and state regulations.

Coordinate special projects, studies, and marketing strategies with Communications and Marketing teams.

Represent DCASE in liaison roles with governmental agencies, private foundations, contractors, and consultants.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Arts Administration, Visual or Performing Art, Arts Education, Art History, Architecture, Urban Planning, Museum Studies, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

Ten years of progressively responsible managerial or project management experience, with five years in supervisory roles related to visual arts program management.

Knowledge:

Strong knowledge of fiscal and fundraising operations, contract negotiations, local, federal, and state regulations; established relationships with artists, cultural organizations, curators, and producers.

Abilities:

Leadership, partnership building, prioritization, time management, social media use, robust exhibition scheduling, and budget oversight.

Skills:

Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, presentation, public speaking, budgeting, strategic planning, marketing; proficiency in Microsoft Office, budgeting tools, and contract negotiation.

Demonstrated record of managing arts-related programming, staff, and budgets.

Other Requirements

Flexible schedule to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional travel.

Work indoors and occasionally outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
