Position Summary:

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Certified Nurse Midwife provides comprehensive health care for women from puberty through menopause. Key areas include prenatal, labor and delivery care, health care assessment, diagnosis and management for preventive health, normal gynecologic care, and minor medical problems as determined by scope of practice guidelines. The role implements, interprets, and manages laboratory, radiology, or other diagnostic screenings and prescribes therapeutic agents, medications and devices. It also educates patients on health status improvement and prevention techniques, directs and manages members of the health care team in campus and off‑campus clinical sites, and supervises and teaches graduate students and resident physicians in clinical settings, lectures, and skills assessment labs. The position supports research initiatives and academic program participation.

Duties Distribution:

60% within Mile Square Health Center – Auburn Gresham Clinic, 25% within the College of Medicine Obstetrics & Gynecology department, and 15% within the UI Hospital OB/Gyn department.

Clinical Responsibilities

Perform physical exams, collect and document data, manage labor, and conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and laboratory studies.

Assess patients for admission and admit when required; independently manage and deliver low‑risk women in labor who are 37 weeks or greater.

Perform and record initial prenatal history and physical on patients in OB ER and labor and delivery.

Provide routine prenatal and intrapartum care, documenting admission, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum orders for low‑risk women.

Provide outpatient prenatal, gynecologic, and women’s health care services for low‑risk women.

Evaluate and examine complicated patients in the high‑risk obstetric clinic, reproductive health clinic, OB ER, and labor and delivery; present to OB/GYN for management plan and document orders/implementation.

Provide care according to the collaborative practice agreements at UI Health; provide sexually transmitted infection treatment to partners of patients.

Perform initial infant evaluation and initiate emergency measures when indicated; interpret diagnostic tests and prescribe medications including controlled substances.

Administer local anesthesia, perform routine deliveries and episiotomies.

Work collaboratively with other staff members of the OB care team.

Provide 24‑hour, 7‑day in‑house coverage for the midwifery practice, including backup call.

Assist with scheduling of patients for upcoming procedures, coordinating with other services and completing necessary documentation, scheduling forms, insurance forms, and clearance.

Perform other related duties and projects as the clinical practice evolves.

Professional Responsibilities

Integrate evidence‑based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision‑making; participate in departmental/hospital QI peer review and competency assessment activities.

Identify and participate in quality‑improvement initiatives within the practice setting; contribute data to ACNM benchmarking.

Obtain formal and/or independent learning activities to maintain and develop clinical and professional skills and knowledge.

Establish an effective relationship with collaborating physicians; participate in obstetrical, gynecological, and midwifery research activities.

Participate in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents, and other healthcare staff; supervise, teach, and mentor across disciplines.

Participate in lectures, skills laboratories, case conferences, and assist with curriculum development and instruction; assess and evaluate performance of Advanced Practice nursing students, medical students, and residents.

Engage in community activities to educate patients, families, and community members.

Maintain a faculty appointment to receive clinical privileges at the University of Illinois Health System.

Plan, assign, and review staff work to ensure group objectives are met; hire, train, develop, and manage staff.

Act as liaison between school leadership, Chicago Public Schools, and health care providers.

Oversee local clinics, managing staff, vacations, and day‑to‑day operations.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master of Science, Master of Science in Nursing, or Doctorate in Nursing Practice degree required.

Advanced Practice Nursing, Registered Professional Nurse, and Certified Nurse Midwife licenses required.

Currently licensed or eligible for Controlled Substance and DEA licenses required.

Minimum of one (1) year previous clinical experience required.

Sound knowledge of physiology, pathology, and principles of safe patient management.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem‑solving skills.

Current valid American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification required.
