Job Description The State & Local Tax (SALT) Director role is instrumental in supporting Principals and the broader SALT practice through significant contributions to team development, maintaining key client relationships, and business development. The director will drive the practice’s goals in partnership with Principals and Managing Directors, demonstrating high standards of project management, technical thought leadership, and client‑centricity.

Job Summary As a SALT Director, you will provide leadership on complex tax matters, mentor junior staff, develop client solutions, and drive business growth while ensuring compliance with all relevant tax authorities.

Job Duties Research

Identify situations requiring additional research and review state statutory, regulatory, and judicial guidance.

Analyze and apply client‑specific facts to published state guidance, determine needed outreach, and develop a strategy for clarification.

Prepare formal memoranda and matrices to formalize positions on state tax treatment.

Partner with Core Tax and Specialized Tax Services professionals to resolve complex and contentious state and local tax matters.

Tax Compliance

Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while identifying filing obligations across all areas of SALT and opportunities to minimize tax and reporting burdens.

Ensure timely and accurate filing of compliance engagements.

Identify out‑of‑scope compliance areas needing additional workstreams (e.g., nexus study, apportionment study, taxability study) and communicate pricing and needs to stakeholders.

Tax Consulting

Handle all state and local agency inquiries regarding tax issues.

Draft responses to revenue agent/auditor questions and challenges.

Monitor implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects.

Provide recommended solutions by combining tax knowledge with business and industry understanding.

Tax Controversy

Represent clients before state and local taxing authorities on contested tax issues.

Respond to all questions from state agencies.

Ensure accurate and timely response to tax information requests.

Tax Specialization

Act as a subject‑matter expert in the chosen industry for SALT.

Identify cross‑selling opportunities with other BDO services.

Serve as client relationship professional for SALT services provided to designated clients.

Develop tools and process improvements to enhance efficiency of SALT services.

Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109

Review state tax provision workpapers.

Apply industry standards, firm policies, and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements related to ASC 740 and ASC 450 calculations and accruals.

Recognize, measure, and document income and indirect tax accruals.

Business Development

Identify, develop, or implement solutions that reduce a client’s state and local tax burden.

Participate in relevant industry groups.

Lead marketing campaigns and external SALT initiatives.

Collaborate with Business Development and strategic partners to drive SALT service offerings.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise and review work of senior managers, managers, and staff on SALT engagements.

Manage engagements to ensure timely billing and DSO below 40 days.

Ensure staff are trained on relevant tax software.

Evaluate performance and develop goals for professional development.

Deliver timely performance feedback and complete evaluations.

Act as a career advisor to staff as appropriate.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation (required).

Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation (preferred).

Juris Doctorate (preferred).

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Solid organizational skills and ability to meet project deadlines.

Ability to multi‑task independently or within a team.

Strong managerial skills for delegating work.

Capacity to build and maintain strong client and internal relationships.

Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on engagements.

Advanced knowledge of tax standards and filing requirements.

Experience

9+ years of prior SALT experience (required).

Prior supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis (required).

Experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships (preferred).

Experience in preparing or reviewing tax provisions (highly preferred).

License/Certifications

CPA or other relevant certification (preferred).

Software

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Word) (preferred).

Familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools (preferred).

Salary Range

National: $157,500 – $420,000

Maryland: $157,500 – $420,000

NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $157,500 – $420,000
