Job Summary Plans and directs the personal, financial and operational activities for security operations system wide; maintains 24‑hour accountability for operations across the region. In collaboration with the site manager for security, directs and supervises security personnel, monitors quality and quantity of workflow, initiates or recommends personnel actions such as hires, fires, disciplines, and completes performance appraisals. Provides leadership to the law enforcement and security team and promotes a proactive loss‑prevention focus.
Oversees, develops, and approves system‑wide policies and procedures for Security Management programs and security systems. Drafts policy provisions and provides interpretation of function for department policies. In collaboration with market and site, identifies the need for and defines procedures/protocols and modifies as necessary to obtain goals and objectives to provide symmetry across the system. Develops short‑ to long‑range goals in regard to Security Management programs and oversees the assessment of goal attainment and ensures site management follows appropriately. Assists site management and COO in developing and monitoring the budget for the security department.
Provides strategic system‑wide leadership for planning and directing the personnel, financial and operational activities of Security programs. Serves as liaison between the Security Department and other departments and outside agencies in ensuring safety of patients, visitors and employees, physical facilities and the prevention of material loss. Oversees the development of functional processes for system‑wide Security Programs and security systems. Provides system‑wide liaison and coordination with hospital safety and emergency management committees relative to the provision of security services.
In collaboration with site COO’s, provides an overall audit and assessment of physical security needs for the respective campus. Functions as a project manager when necessary for the installation of physical security systems on the respective campus. Audits line security operations to ensure consistency in the application of patrol strategies and service initiatives.
Monitors activities for and ensures compliance with laws, government regulations, JCAHO requirements and DMC policies. As directed, implements external and internal audit recommendations. Ensures hospital departments achieve objectives for diversity of their suppliers.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in law enforcement, security management or a discipline requiring high levels of communication and analytical skill, or equivalent combination of education and/or related experience.
Five or more years of progressively more responsible experience in security and/or law enforcement, including at least three years at a supervisory or management level.
Skills Required
Analytical ability to create solutions to difficult administrative, technical or human situations, to anticipate and resolve a broad range of issues and concerns on multiple, sometimes unrelated topics, to determine the need for process development and refinement, to independently evaluate situations and outline ramifications of multiple solutions or options, and to recommend goals for a function/area.
Communication and/or interpersonal skills for contact with internal and external customers/stakeholders to obtain and interpret a variety of information based on knowledge of departmental practices, DMC policies and programs and specific technical and regulatory knowledge. Discretion must be exercised in deciding what and how to communicate. Conflict resolution skills must be exercised where policy issues are concerned both within the functional area and interdepartmentally. Diplomacy, tact and listening skills are required.
Project management skills including the ability to define program, project, or process objectives, identify stakeholders and their interests, plan steps, coordinate and allocate human, technological and fiscal resources to accomplish goals and objectives in a resourceful yet timely manner.
Leadership skills including demonstrated willingness to pursue leadership roles with increasing levels of accountability, comfort with decision‑making responsibilities, coaching, teaching and counseling skills, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others and to forge alliances and garner support.
Facility Description DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, Michigan’s first Level I Trauma Center, helped pioneer the evolution of emergency medicine and currently has one of the busiest and most well‑equipped emergency departments anywhere. The first and largest verified burn center in the state is at Receiving, and it is one of only 43 in the nation. Receiving also offers the state’s leading 24/7 hyperbaric oxygen program, Metro Detroit’s first certified primary stroke center, and the nationally recognized and accredited DMC Rosa Parks Geriatric Center of Excellence.
